martin luther king jr. as a child but he was really a child and grew up just like you, and so that's why i wanted to write this book. the book is entitled" my brother martin." it has lots of illustrations in it. i hope that you will have a chance to get to see the book more closely. ok. so this is part of it. a sister remembers. the sister, of course, is me. ok. the book starts out -- i will quote some words that martin said on the march on washington. i have a dream that one day little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with the little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. i have a dream today. that's what he said in washington, d.c. at the lincoln memorial. ok. the book starts out and it has a picture of me. now when i wrote this book, i envisioned that i would be reading to children just like you, and the reason i thought of that is because my grandmother and my aunt lived in the home with us and many times they would baby-sit for my mother and father and they would sit a

martin luther king jr., i am pleased to be joined by dr. clayborne carson, the director of the mlk research and education institute at stanford. he joins us tonight from colorado. always good to have you back on this program. >> great to be with you. tavis: at the king day to you. what do you make of the fact that, on this day, we do not just celebrate the legacy and life of dr. king, but the first african-american president inaugurated for the second time? >> there is so much to celebrate on this day and so much to remember about the part of king's dream that has not been fulfilled. particularly the issue of poverty. there are so many things that make us thankful that the civil- rights reforms were achieved. i think it is important, particularly on this day, to remember that, if king were around, he would be pushing us to deal with that have -- that pestering issue of poverty. tavis: why is it that you think that, with all the evidence supporting the notion that pozner -- the poverty is threatening our democracy, it is a matter of national

and i'm martin.t fish spend the beginning of their lives drifting out there on the open ocean, floating around as tiny, microscopic fish together in a mass called plankton. they live that way until they're ready to leave the plankton. that's when they head to one of the most remarkable habitats on earth-- the coral reef. martin: and the coral reef has more different kinds of creatures living on it than any other habitat in the ocean. let's see how many creatures we can find in one minute down there. ♪ chris: a moray eel! our first reef creature. these guys are ambush predators with a powerful bite. and look at that cool, twisty swimming style. martin: over there. boxfish. these guys are slow, but not many other fish eat them because their skin is poisonous. three. parrotfish. chris: four. a cowfish. martin: five. soldier fish. chris: six. tobacco fish. martin: ah! there are way too many to count. all different shapes and colors the reef is alive with life. ooh, a blowfish! chris: i love these little

this week is dorian clayborne carson and "martin's dream" my journey and the legacy of martin luther king, jr.. in it he recalls his journey from teenage civil rights activist to his presence at the 1963 march on -- he includes encounters with the many leaders and organizers in the civil rights movement including stokely carmichael and the king family. it's about an hour. >> host: dr. carson thanks for joining me on after words. >> guest: it's my pleasure. >> host: your book, "martin's dream" is a memoir and a history book. in the book you talk about your personal journey and you are very candid about your life and you also cover new insights as a historian to the life and legacy of dr. martin luther king jr.. what prompted you to write the book this way? >> guest: well, i wanted to write about the martin luther king anniversary and 50 years of my life that came to light and his legacy and life coincides with my coming-of-age. so part of it was to move those two tasks. i felt my life have been connected to the king legacy and yet i felt that there was something about my life that nee

i was pleased to see martin luther king in person. i heard about him and everyone looks forward to what was he going to say because he was already known as this great orator but his speech was very short. it wasn't one of his longwinded. he spoke for an hour. this was 15, 16 minutes. and it was planned to be less. it was about seven, eight minutes. that's how he wrote his speech to be. >> guest: one of the things i found out later is that when it got to the end of his prepared remarks, he thought this requires something more. he had kind of laid out his agenda. malae can look at his advanced text and go back to the south and go back to all these places and continue to protest. but then he thought that the occasion required something more. he had been talking about this dream that he had. he talked about it for years. the american dream come and then it had become his dream and he had been in detroit just three months before and he talked about i have a dream that america will someday realize these principles in the declaration of inde

while standing in tennessee, martin luther king's words rang horribly true. a single gunshot would kill the leader. the shot came from over there. fired from a tiny room it tore into the body of the entire country. rioting broke out. blacks bellowed out theirager in a fire storm of anger and frustration. all this triggered by the murder of a man who preached that freedom would come through nonviolence. king brought nobility and hope to his cause. he meant so much. >> martin luther king dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. he died in the cause of that effort. in this difficult day, in this difficult time for the united states, it's perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are. >> was america destined to gun down it's brightest stars? it seemed so the night of california's 1968 presidential primary election. robert kennedy had just won with 46% of the vote. he would thank his supporters for the victory that seemed almost certain to take him to the presidency. leaving the podium, on his way to meet with reporters, he took a

martin?u know, martin, i think kristin asked the right question though which is how does it feel to be a re-elected president she asked the president as he was walking back into the white house. i think a lot of the answer quite clearly was in the address. if you compare it to the 2009 inaugural address that the president gave, that was a much broader speech. broader sounds nition and inclusive but it was also more vague. in 2009 he talked about equality but he didn't single out any particular agenda. in 2009 he talked about the idea that we're there for each other but he didn't name medicare, medicaid, or social security which he did this time. and as everyone has noticed, the discussion of the struggle for gay rights right alongside the struggle for women's rights and the rights of african-americans which he singled out here. partly reflects the fact that as a two-term president, he has a different position on some of those issues now, and he's urging us to evolve with him. >> karen, you we
