martin michael jr. -- this is not martin yet. michael jr. is born in 1929. he's still finishing up, and even when a.d. williams is born in 1931, 1930, he's also finishing up his ministerial studies at morehouse, so all of this is taking place as he's trying to gain his own stature. and once reverend williams dies in 1931 and he becomes the preacher, the pastor of this church, what we see is that he has this drive. he wants to not only achieve what reverend williams has achieved, but he wants to achieve even more. he wants to go out and create his own legacy, and he comes to the ministry during the depression at a time when it's very difficult to bring in new members, especially some members who provide some donations to help the church along, so he brings the church through the 30s by providing services to the people, food, help with housing, the church became a social service agency as well as a place for religious guidance. the kinds of things that we would later refer to as the social gospel. so this is the environment that martin grows up in. but again,

carson: who is martin luther king? when we look at martin luther king, there is one side of him that is a famous individual. he is the 1964 winner of the nobel peace prize. he is the person who really was the most influential leader of a great social movement. he is the only american who is honored with a national holiday in his name, so there is that uniqueness that practically everybody in the world knows the name martin luther king, but the question that i would like to address in this setting is who really was martin luther king? because one of the advantages of using a setting like this is we can experience history the way it should be. it should not be about names and dates that you remember. it should be about the study of the things that survive from the past. that is why a site, a historical site, is so important. that is why the king papers project, when coretta scott king named me to edit martin luther king's papers, she understood that in the long run what would survive were the papers that martin luther ki

martin luther king jr. is one of the most eloquent voices. in his letter from the birmingham jail in 1963 when different white faith leaders are asking him to stop the protests in birmingham, he says the young people in birmingham being arrested and incarcerated are going to one day be lionized by the nation as heroes for bringing us back to what dr. king calls great wells of democracy that were dug deep by the founding fathers. the whole entire black freedom struggle is an effort to expand american democracy so it is broad enough to include black people. even this idea of black lives matter, i think it is an extraordinarily eloquent phrase, but it is a testament to the fact that throughout american history, black lives have not mattered. it has been quite the reverse. there is always this push to try to get those lives to matter in law and policy, but also in our culture. i think that is what is so important. we need new policies. new politics, new institutions. we have to change hearts and minds. have a c

let's speak to martin yip in hong kong. martin, just put these latest charges into context for us.t is very likely that because of these national—security charges when they are brought to the magistrate tomorrow they will be released now. you might remember the recent ruling in a similar case on national security grounds. they have to prove themselves that they would not be recommitting any offences on national security grounds, they will be released on bail. it is unlikely they will be granted bail that way, that would bar them in running in elections. the one that they wanted to run last year but it was postponed because of covid—19 concerns by the leader. and if they found guilty on discharge of committing conspiracy to commit subversion, the harshest punishment would be life imprisonment. even if they were given lenient sentences because this law could already bar them from running in future elections, even when they're able to walk free from the jar. so a whole generation or at least half a generation or at least half a generation of activists from hong kong's political scene.
