martin luther king jr.. a long time coming, the vision of my father's fraternity, aplha phi ap [lha bill does-and the establishment of a foundation led by mr. harry johnson and 11 staff persons and acts of congress, 10 years of fund-raising and a lot of hard work, an earthquake, and a hurricane but today, we are here. [applause] and thank god we are here. it is a great time of celebration and the entire king family is brought to witness this day. i am especially proud to stand here as one of the four children to whom my father referred to as he resounded the american dream that one day we would live in a nation where we would not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. today represents another stone in the life of america. this is a day that all americans can be proud of and may i remind you that this is not just a celebration for african- americans but for americans and citizens are around this world. martin luther king is to talk about hope. the first time i met him in the early 1960's, when i was about 12 -- [laughter] i was really struck by what a quiet man he was. always seemed quiet, but the first time i heard him speak, suddenly, it was is it if he was bringing up fire of hope over all of us -- it was as if he was bringing a fire of hope over all of us. we all needed, desperately, a man like dr. king to turn our hopes and dreams into action. he aroused in us a total commitment to his dream, which drew 1/4 of a million of us here in 1963. in those days, i must confess that i was afraid to come to washington, because it was the south and it operated like the south. i was of little girl from new york, and not always scared the hell -- i was a little girl from new york and that always scared the hell out of me. i can remember good reason for it feeling that way. taking the train from new york to visit my grandmother in north carolina -- and it was here in our nation's capital that the conductor would ask me and my family

he called and he said "you don't know me, but my name is martin luther king, jr. coming to new york and i'd welcome an opportunity to meet with you." and he was coming here to speak to the religious community, trying to encourage them become more engaged in the movement that he had started, the montgomery bus boycott with rosa parks and i said yes and when he came he went to abyssinia to speak and i listened to him speak for the first time and i was blown away by his articulation. well, you've all heard him so you know what his passion can be like and how moving and then we retid to the basement to speak for... he said only a few minutes. it was almost four hours. (laughter) but when he got through and i heard about the service through the journey he was embarked on and i would ser it with honor and asuch passion as i ft. and from that day on ibecame a part of the... officially part of the movement in specific to the s.c.l.c. and to meet all of these people who i eventually met and took my place not only as a supporter to the movement from the financial point of v
