we begin here with a photograph of doctor martin luther king. why this image, and let me explain a little bit why these images are, we tried to focus on what was in our collection, for the most part. we have been collecting images, now, for 50 years, and he will see great diversity of portraits here, the portrait gallery opened in 1968, so that's an anniversary for us. this image of doctor martin luther king, he is at a news conference, and he is announcing his initiative for that year for people's campaigns, and part of that campaign was a big part of the campaign was, the march on washington, poor people's march on washington. that occurred after his death, he didn't live to see that, but it continued and went on. the march in washington occurred in mid-may, they arrived from all over the country, arrived in mid-may, and stay on the mall, there right on the side of the 2nd , the lincoln memorial, for six weeks, ringing attention to the plight of the poor, nationwide. the rain, of course, created mud, and before too many days, they were up to t
