[trumpet playing "reveille" fades to silence] >>> boy, it's hard to believe it's been almost eight years. in salt lake city, the trial over the kidnapping of elizabeth smart has transfixed much of the country. the level of abuse she endured was beyond horrifying, it is unspeakable. her story is the subject of a special presentation tonight right here on cnn. here's martin savidge to take us back to the day when the young girl many people assumed was dead turned up alive. >> reporter: it had been nine months since elizabeth smart disappeared from her home, when police finally got a break. just days after brian mitchell's photos appeared on "america's most wanted" police received two 911 calls. the callers said they had seen mitchell on this street, and he had been walking with a woman

martin savidge is on the phone with us. my understanding is we may be close to getting some kind of a statement from the prosecutor's office? >> reporter: that's correct. we have been told it could be momentarily, that there is a statement that's going to be coming from the prosecutor's office. it will come in two ways, one transmitted electronically by e-mail and a hard copy of some sort, and then we anticipate that the solicitor general will then come out for aruba and deliver that statement and perhaps take questions from reporters. you know, of course, all of this dates back to the jaw bone that was discovered on about the 12th of november by tourists. it was turned into the hotel desk of the devry phoenix hotel. they turned it over to authority, and they turned it over to the authors in the hague in the netherlands, and they have been putting it through forensic testing ever since to determine if, one, it's human. it's believed it is. and then the most important question, is it directly related to the natalee holloway

let's bring in cnn's martin savid savidge. what's going on here? >> this is the book here by the governor of louisiana. from page one, he slams the obama administration for its handling of the gulf oil crisis saying they were more concerned about the political image they were about the environmental damage being done as a result of the gulf spill. he opens the book up, going back to the first visit that president obama gave to louisiana, immediately after the oil began gushing into the oil. cnn was there that day. we decided to take you back to it. sunday may 2nd, 12 days after the deep water horizon oil rig blew up, air force one touches down. bobby jindal writes, i was expecting words concern object the oil spill and words of confidence how the government was here to help. no, the president was upset about something else. jindal goes on to describe what he says was a clearly agitated president, dressing down the governor over jindal's request in a letter that food stamps be given to those who lost their jobs due to the spill. in the book, he says
