[ gunfire ] this is the terrifying scene in nairobi, kenya, today. a group of armed men stormed this crowded mall and they started shooting. according to kenya's president the office there at least says that 39 people have been killed and 150 wounded. and there are americans who were inside that mall when the attack happened. they tell cnn that shots rang out and grenades exploded and that people hid in stairwells and under cars in the parking lot until police arrived. we are told that at least one of the attackers is dead. the rest are still said to be holed up inside the mall. and it is now past midnight in nairobi. we do have some indication as to who is behind this attack. an extremist group with ties to al qaeda posted a claim of responsibility on their twitter account. the group is called al shabaab. and it has been issuing threats for violence for years. mor

martin savidge has been following the story for us in ellenwood, georgia, right outside of atlanta. martin is joining us on the phone right now. fill us in on the good news. she's okay, is that what we're hearing? >> it is good news is, the answer to every parent's prayer ever since she was abducted 2:15 in the morning on tuesday. the fbi is telling cnn she was found apparently she was dropped off at some point. we don't know the where and we don't know exactly when. but she was picked up by police, and they say she is fine. which means of course, she is alive and reasonably well and that she is being checked out at this particular time. and we expect that's shortly there's going to be some reunion. we're in the neighborhood here in ellenwood, the subdivision which has been rocked by all of this because so many people felt this was just something that couldn't happen in their neighborhood, that there would be a home invasion in the middle of the night and the most precious commodity, their children, would be taken, in this case that 14-year-old girl. the good news from the fbi, she h

martin savidge as you know has been coverage the story and he's "outfront" tonight. martin, when and why did castro talk? because i know he answered a lot of questions. >> reporter: yeah, he did. hello, erin. he actually was making this statement, the interrogation took place a couple days after he was arrested. he's in the hands of the cleveland police department and he's at the city jail. but the why, that's a very good question. why did he speak? i mean, after all, he could have gotten an attorney and the attorney would have said don't say a word. but instead he just reveals everything and we should point out the interrogation tapes were obtained by nbc. >> one very bizarre exchange where castro told investigators about a phone call that he had made to amanda berry's mother, and this was a truly strange back and forth. >> it was. i thought i knew everything about this case. i didn't know that and it was really almost horrifying to hear. as you point out he claims, castro, that he used amanda berry's telephone to call her mother apparently feeling, i guess he was fe

martin savidge is here with more. >> of course the good news is this young girl is safe and sound andto the 150 state and local law enforcement. that should not go understated. but then there is the issue and this has always been the debate, why did it happen. what terrified that neighborhood was the report that it was random, that they broke into this home and it could have been anybody's home. now we're starting to find out maybe it wasn't so random and that is as a result of connections that are starting to be made. one of those connections is that the mother of this 14-year-old was arrested in a drug raid last year. she was not charged or the charges against her were dropped. but another person arrested in that same raid, one of those now in custody in connection with a kidnapping case. so there is the link. exactly what that link is, we don't know. and the other thing you should know, two other people on the loose. this is the clayton county police chief talking about the good and the problems still out there. >> she's been reunified with her family. we currently have two suspect

martin savidge has been covering it. , last night when we spoke you said there are a lot of strange things here and questions to be answered. tonight, though, we'll celebrate her return. today those strange questions that you raised are loud and clear. what happened? >> reporter: we're starting to find out here that there are a couple of recurring themes here, not necessarily good ones. first of all as you've already pointed out here, this does not appear now to be a random home invasion with a kidnapping. number two we're also finding out there could be as many as six suspects involved here. lastly there was a reoccurring theme. that theme seems to be drugs and money. let's talk about the suspects and the relationships to the kidnap victim's mother. she was arrested last year along with a man who is also under arrest in connection with the kidnapping of her daughter. what's the relationship? well, at that time it was a drug bust that had the two of them wrapped up. charges were dropped against both the mother and that ma

martin savidge joins us now. what do we know about this connection?been doing digging through documents and one of the common themes we find, they revolve around a background of drugs and money. specifically, the newest document is a criminal complaint we got. and in it, that's kind of the federal case's cliff notes if you will of what they've seen so far. they say the night this girl was abducted, the gunmen broke into the home, the family, the mother and two teens, along with the family dog tried to hide in the closet. the gunmen found it, kicked open the door, the girl was holding the family dog, the dog jumps out of her arms, barks, and that's when the gunman shoots it right in front of her. they drag her off into the darkness, her mother chasing after screaming, it just shows you the brutality and the emotion of that night. also, she says she thinks there were about four people that helped kidnap her. that's a significant number over if two. and lastly, she says that she was dropped off at a relative's home when she was released by the kidnappers
