the narrative was rebellions heat during the summer of 1967 and the wave of rebellion, the hundreds of rebellions that followed the assassination of martin luther king were the last hurrah and after that, urban political urban violence was effectively stamped out this proved not to be the case. we know based on this archive and my research that there were merely 2000 rebellions in the segregated black neighborhoods between this passage of the safe streets act in june 1968 and through 1972 whereas in the earlier decade from 1964 to the king rebellions there were only about 300 so these things increased in frequency and i didn't know what to do with this information. for a really long time i have a research area that i had written a few articles and this is a difficult history to confront. i think for the most part historians have stayed away from dealing with subjects of crime and violence in black communities, both political violence and internal violence. and when george floyd happened in the wave of protests i could no longer sit on his history because it is something that we need to reckon with the long history of black rebellion. we
