reporter chris martinez joins us live along highway 58 in mojave with a look at damage. chris. >> reporter: frank, i'm actually standing in the middle of state road 58 here right now. it is completely covered under thick mud. if you look down here, that's the front end of a very long line of cars, trucks, semis, all of them stuck in this deep mud. they are no pulling them out one after another. it's going to take some time and more rain is expected here today. crews are scrambling to clear mud from interstate 5 north of los angeles. a portion of the highway typically congested with traffic is nearly empty. geologists and other experts are inspecting the roads and nearby hillsides to ensure the interstate is safe. >> 911! help! >> reporter: a violent storm triggered flash floods thursday that transformed busy streets into a river of mud. >> we're stuck. >> reporter: firefighters rescued dozens of people trapped in their cars and homes. >> i have been here for 24 years now and have never seen this much water. really can't tell how fast that's moving or how safe it is. >> r

richard martinez, give us a feeling for what it's like. you went through this, a shooting at the school from your son goes to school. there are parents of every student there waiting for the phone call, just waiting, waiting, waiting for that phone kul there, hoping to hear from their son, their daughter as soon as possible. that they're okay. what is that day like for the people who don't get the call from their son or daughter? >> well, lucy mcbeth who lost her son jordan in florida once said, it's as if every fear that you ever had for your child comes crashing down on you in one moment. and i've said that when i got that call it took us down to a place we had never been before. you know it's bad to lose a child, but when you get that call, it's -- it takes you down to a place you've never been before. and we've got to do so much better in this country. and i know what those people are going through. you know, you send your kid off to school in the morning and they're livinger that lives and everything is fine. and then the next moment,

chris martinez has the latest from roseburg, oregon. >> reporter: members of law enforcement will be on hand at umpqua community college today as campus reopens to student and staff. the full semester had only been in session for four days when tragedy struck, adding the small college to a string of schools rocked by a mass shooting. >> we did not want to be part of the sandy hook club, but we are now members. senior members are taking care of us. >> reporter: people flocked to church on sunday to pray for the victims and show support for survivors. dozens of worshipers at new beginnings church of god where pastor randy scroggins shared his story. 18 only see scroggins was in the classroom last thursday when chris harper mercer entered and began shooting. >> and he said, "get up, get up". and she was frozen to the floor, playing dead. he crossed over lacey and shot the next one. >> i'm overwhelmed by support i've gotten from everyone. >> reporter: over the weekend military veteran chris mintz thanked well-wishers from his hospital bed. he was shot several times as he tried to stop ha

if convicted, martinez faces up to 7 years in prison. >>> two men robbed a local coin store and tied up the employees. police say the men walked into the colonial jewelry trading store on main street apparently wanting to sell a piece of jewelry but that's when they attacked two clerks and made off with an unknown amount of gold coins. >> during the transaction, apparently one of these suspects pulled out a taser and tased an employee. a second employee heard the noise car, over to assist and he was tased, as well. >> one of the suspects was also wielding a knife. fox 25 learned a similar incident happened last march, different suspects made off with $250,000 in gold coins. no arrests have been made in either case. >>> police want your help tracking down this bank robbery suspect. these surveillance images new now. police say he hit the systems bank late this morning passing a note to the teller and then running off. chelmsford police is checking to see if this is connected to similar robberies in stone hum >>> we heard a 9-month-old baby boy involved in a devastating crash has died.
