leigh martinez is live at the clinic to explain. >> reporter: the clinic resident says the damage to the eggs and embryos is unknown, some of the clinic staff was able to find some of the eggs and say they are still good. this problem was discovered by the laboratory director who noticed the level of liquid nitrogen in one tank was too low during a routine check. if the nitrogen decreases it will cause the temperature to rise. this comes days after an unrelated tank failure at a clinic in cleveland were 2000 eggs or embryos were damaged. that affected 600 families. officials in cleveland say the failure was linked to the loss of liquid nitrogen. that is likely what happened here in san francisco. >> my heart breaks for these patients and providers. i don't think that anything was done wrong or inappropriately, but whenever you deal with technology, there is always going to be the potential for failures. >> reporter: that same doctor says this type of failure is so rare that data does not exist on the risk factor for malfunctions. the technology keeping them frozen is behind the birth
