cnn's martin savage is in mexico beach, florida, a town that was nearly level bed by the storm. in, what's the latest there? >> reporter: wolf, we've seen a significant spike in the death toll from hurricane michael. yesterday we were reporting over 19. now we're up to 26. in bay county, the number jumped by 9 today, and it doubled in 24 hours here in mexico beach going from 2 to 4. wech g we've got a drone up in the air and if you take a look at that sort of vantage point, you can understand why the massive amount of debris, the carpet of destruction that you find everywhere is making the search for those still unaccounted for so very, very difficult. there are a number of factors the reason it's jumped up. it is that communications improved in many areas so they're reporting in. in other places, they've finally been able to get teams in where it's been difficult to get in and then in other communities, some people have actually started returning home and they're making discoveries on their own so that's part of the reason. authorities always feared they would see a jump in the

for the latest now, let's go to cnn's martin savidge in mexico beach, florida.e you seeing there? >> hey, fredricka. it's saturday, of course, so this is the first real nonwork day where residents can begin to return. that's one of the things you're starting to see. the problem is the city, the town, is not ready for them. it is still in a state of devastation. i think if you look at more of these drone images, the devastation is almost beyond comprehension. i've covered many, many natural disasters. the only thing i can equate what you're seeing here too on such a scale is something along the lines of a tsunami. it is just stunning. almost after a while mind-numbing to try to comprehend. there are, you can probably see in the images coming from the drone search and recovery teams working this particular area right now. this is at least the third day that they have been doing this. this is the secondary sweep sort of thing. yesterday, the first victim was recovered in mexico beach. that was a male. he was found several hundred yards away from his home. so that t

we go martin savidge in mexico beach, and what are the officials saying today and what are you hearingple who live there? >> well, you have two different stories. of course, you have the officials saying that they are doing the best they can to bring some relief, and some residents frustrated and they are frustrated that they didn't see it fast enough. this is a different view of the mexico beach that we are showing you to day, and it is a marina side, but it continues to show you the incredible power of the wind and the water and how they have devastated literally flattened in many places this community. governor rick scott was in the area. and he was touring not just this beach community, but other points inland. we should stress that this is is a regional devastation and not just one community. here is the quick assessment that the governor gave. >> we have 11,000 people registered for fema right now, and we had a conversation of how fast the fema resources will come out. we have local law enforcement from around the state coming into the impacted counties to make sure that people a

martin savidge is in mexico beach this morning. there is that image of that one house that with stood it, but everything else just flattened. what are people telling you this morning? >> reporter: people realize that this community is not going to be the same. you talked about the death toll. we have seen a significant spike in the last 24 to 48 hours. the reason for that officials say is the fact that there is more communication. as a result of that, areas that have been unable to relay what information they had regarding those that were lost are filling in the blanks. then you have more people getting able to get in there because of the massive cleanup. if you look at the debris field and the damage in this community and not just this community. i need to stress that this is probably the hardest hit. the area impacted is massive. so that's why now and only now you are starting to see them get to areas where they are making the recoveries. as for people returning, today is the day for doing that here. i am i have to say surprised.
