marty dempsey has been in combat almost continuously since 2001.ivision, did an extremely good job during the sadr uprising in background. he's got, went back again and did the, tried to put together the iraqi armed forces and police. very experienced guy. he was the acting sencon commander for a good bit of time and now, he's the chairman. he's a delightful person. almost unusually capable of interpersonal skills. he's an irish tenor, a very attractive person. i think they have formed an unusually close relationship. >> different than you've observed in previous administrations? >> well, admiral mike mullen was extremely close tht previous administration with the bush team. certainly colin powell was a trusted figure as a chairman by both bush 41 and then clinton. we've had a number of remarkable people as the chairman and marty dempsey continues in that line. however, the difference is this guy's been out there on the front fighting these wars. literally, since he was a colonel. a lot of these guys start to remember peace keeping operations in th

secretaries of defense bob gates and leon panetta and chairs of the joint chiefs mike mullen and now marty dempsey have really been advocates for the idea that diplomacy and development could help prevent conflicts and rebuild shattered societies that would in turn lighten the load on our military. so together we're making sure our shoulders, diplomats and development experts are working more closely together. are listening to each other. are contributing to being part of a all hands on deck whole of government approach. and we're also trying to make sure we get our bureaucracies in washington trying to do the same. you know by next january when i will have traveled i guess a million miles or more, i will look back on this period as one that has been a great privilege and honor to serve. but i will also know that we have a lot of work to do. when i came into this office i knew that we were going to have to confront a lot of difficult problems. i'll just quickly mention a few, one, iran's nuclear activities. how are we going to confront what was a clear threat? how could we unify the international

i think that's true for both marty dempsey and myself. there are two laws that we are enforcing in this area right now that are of note. one is the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." we just got a report that i received yesterday that indicates that that's going very well and that it's going pursuant to all of the planning that was done before that went into effect. it is -- it's not impacting on morale. it's not impacting on unit cohesion. it is not impacting on readiness. and so because it was prepared -- and i give tremendous credit to the military for having laid the groundwork for that going into effect. as a result of that kind of effective planning, this is working well. and very frankly, my view is that the military has kind of moved beyond it. it's become part and parcel of what they've accepted within the military. the other law that we do have is the doma law, the defense of marriage act. and the defense of marriage act obviously does have some impact with regards to the benefits that are provided to same-sex couples. and so we
