we heard from the mayor of boston, marty walsh, this afternoon. he gave a news conference and basically was saying the city itself has seen more or less two feet of snow, and i don't know if you can tell but it definitely is still coming down just a little bit lighter than it has earlier this afternoon. we've been in it since the morning. but they were saying people in boston should anticipate it continuing to come down until 3:00 in the morning. it is possible that boston will see a record setting snowfall. i was actually in the boston area over the weekend, and once the storm really started to percolate, what everyone was talking about was the blizzard of '78. that won't happen as far as the damage thbsank goodness because nobody had as much of a heads-up, but it's the blizzard of 2003 the floods is the story as you were talking to brian todd along coastal massachusetts, in scituate marshfield. that is really really the story wolf. >> brooke stand by. we have the mayor of boston marty walsh on the phone right now. may mayor, are you still in the

marty walsh. >> i urge everyone to stay off the roads before that as well. and the city of boston only emergency operational personnel will be required to report to work tomorrow. second the public schools will be closed tomorrow on tuesday and on wednesday. after school activities are canceled today. we're expecting snow removal at bus yards and streets will take some time as this storm goes through and ends. we're prioritizing our child safety and we want families to be able to plan for two days without school and not have to worry about that. boss son center for youth and families will be open this evening as usual. tomorrow 14 facilities will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for anyone who needs a place to go. trash collection will not take place on tuesday and will be delayed one day as of now. for neighbors with twice queekly collections, the tuesday collection will be canceled. in addition all community meetings planned for the next two days with the city of boston or involvement with city of boston are canceled. snow removal will be a major task.

let's go live to boston mayor marty walsh. mayor, thanks so much for joining us.iously your city has been through blizzards before but the warnings from you and from the new governor are very stark. why does this storm have so many leaders there so concerned? >> well really what we're seeing in the news channels and the weather forecasts, they're all saying anywhere from 24 to 30 inches of snow. the way it's coming in it will be a long storm over the whole course of tonight into tomorrow so we are really preparing just to be safe. we have 800 pieces of equipment which is about 250 more than we normally would have ready to go. we pre-salted our streets and sanded them to get the first foundation down. we canceled school for tuesday and wednesday really to -- for the snowstorm tomorrow then to allow for removal on wednesday. >> you have issued the warning, you told the people of boston and surrounding area go home stay home don't drive. in your view what is the biggest threat this blizzard could pose to the people of boston? what are you most worried about? >> i mea

i want to bring in the mayor of boston right now, marty walsh. he is joining us on the phone.to get over there, mayor? >> well we are expecting 24 to 30 inches that was just reported. we have all of the precautions in place. we are asking people to get off the roads so that we can do our work and also keep people safe. we are asking people to check on their neighbors and check on their elderly neighbors in particular to make sure they're okay as the night goes on. we have crews out there who did some pretreating of the roads. we canceled school for both tomorrow and on wednesday in case of tomorrow because of the snow and wednesday for the clearing of the snow. we have additional firefighters on police officers emts, just to be prepared for anything that might arise. >> the fear isn't just the snow or the cold. it's also the wind right? because some of the areas, maybe not boston they are projecting near hurricane force winds. >> what could happen we could have snow drifts where one side of a residential street could have very low snow and the other side could have feet four o

. >> joining me now on the phone is boston mayor marty walsh. mayor walsh, your city is going into snow emergency. how is it looking there right now? >> it's the last hour and a half getting snow in reverend. it's picking up. not a lot of traffic on the streets at least what i can see outside the office. public transportation has slowed in the city of boston now. i hope everyone follows what we've been saying the the last day and preparing for this storm. i think that we're getting ready for a pretty monster storm here hitting our area. >> you say a monster storm. how many crews do you expect to have tonight clearing the streets? >> in a normal snowstorm that would bring 8-10 inches. that would be 550. tonight we have 800 pieces of equipment ready to hit the streets. we've been pretreating the streets prior to the snow. we're going to try to stay ahead of it as best we can. this storm is coming in bunches. we'll do one clearing and then we'll go right back out and do another probably. >> when are people expected to be off the streets in boston?

reporter: well, the biggest word right now we're getting here in boston, according to the mayor, marty walsh, school may also be cancelled on thursday. so canceled today, tomorrow possibly thursday. also, as far as the photograph ban is concern the -- the travel ban is kerner western part, the ban has been lifted in the eastern part, two-thirds of the state, the travel ban is in effect and people are supposed to continue to stay off the roads. surreal activity in boston. roads shut down with thing and of the blues and emergency workers so it's a walking pedestrian city. people strolling down the center of boston climbing up the snow drifts that have been made. we have seen a lot of kids playing king of the mountain today, these mountains will ge bigger the snow is still coming down. snow plows working the sidewalks and roadways. there were over 30,000 people without power at one point at the height of the storm. they're working on that right now, still considerable power outages. just check the latest numbers and more than 20,000 still left but they're making progress especially out on nantu

boston's mayor, marty walsh, as you might imagine has a lot to deal with at the moment. that's why we were glad he could take time to talk with us briefly. mr. mayor, how is the city handling things so far? >> so far, so good. it's pukd up here. as you said it's getting windy here a lot more snow. the roads are pretty quiet right now, which is good. we had crews out there earlier doing pretreatment of the roads. now we're getting ready for the full storm hitting us here. >> how much equipment do you have out there? >> we have over 800 pieces ready to go on the roads. generally in a storm we have about 500 to 550, but for this storm we have 800 pieces ready to go in the streets. >> the winds are a big concern for you because the snow drifts downs power lines. do you have downed power lines yet. >> not yet. but we're getting ready for that as well. we have the trucks on standby and working with the national grid here in boston to take care of any downed power lines. we're also working with different teams just to make sure we stay on top of all this. >> chad myer has quest

boston mayor marty walsh is giving an update on storm recovery in that area. we're going go live to that now. >> so we can make sure that anybody that needs help will be able to get the help. the boston public health commission has reported shelter facility were able to remain at adequate capacity for demands and continue to identify individuals in need of shelter. i know that police fire and ems have picked up holeless folks and brought them in to shelter to make sure they're safe. if you see someone out there call 911 so we can go out and get them because the storm is still going on and it's not over. some of our emergency services are also still remaining agentive. but everyone -- with everyone's cooperation to meet this ongoing challenge it's not the time for anyone to relax or be complacent. we're not doing that here in the city of boston. people should not drive. if they are not emergency personnel or have an emergency circumstance, i'm asking you to not drive your car. some of our streets still aren't plowed as people are going down -- i saw myself goin

you saw my mayor, marty walsh, they declare things like school days because they oversee the public school but it's not very antagonistic in a storm like this. in other words, once it was clear that something big was going to happen, federal, state and local authorities and first responders are all working together in their emergency management bunkers, whether on the state side or local side trying to make the most rationale, prepared assessments. and as the mayor said, it may be that it's not as bad as we -- as it's being advertised right now. it doesn't matter. at this stage, the most important thing is to give thoughtful, direct advice to the public through a mayor, through a governor and the federal apparatus such as fema the federal emergency management agency is ready to deploy resources should it be needed by any state, and that's why you've seen almost all the new england governors declare already a state of emergency. what that does is it allows the federal resources to sort of advance, pull forward so if they're needed by a locality or state, they'll be there. >> you wrote an ex

i look forward to working with attorney general-elect maura healy, boston mayor marty walsh and many others on this issue. because without strong action, many more individuals and families like the greens will have that same terrible experience. now, when lieutenant governor polito and i complained last year we said we were chasing 100% of the vote. based on the results this morning, we clearly didn't get it. but we campaigned hard in many communities of color, and we did so because we believe these neighborhoods have not benefited from the economic success that has become more commonplace in other parts of the commonwealth. but there are inspiring points of light in these communities because individual economic development, education, community development and social service entrepreneurs are turning so-called lost causes into definite winners. my friend in the commonwealth's new secretary for business development nam pham and the folks at v.a. have worked with their neighbors to literally turn their neighborhood in dorchester into a community on the move where families want to live

boston's democratic mayor, marty walsh, said tuesday he will not stand in the way of a vote but boston'sostonians are saying not here in my backyard. here we have andy zimbelist. author of "circus maximus." christopher dempsey is also here. chris, i saw the news boston got to represent the united states in this bid. i was excited. i was imagining the whole world's eyes being on boston that would be great for the city. why don't you want that? >> look steve, the polls show that fewer than half of people in greater boston are excited about the games coming to town. i think people here understand that massachusetts needs to think big but it also needs to think smart. when you look at the experience of prior host cities it hasn't left them with good outcomes. people here want their civic leaders focused on education and health care and improving their day-to-day lives in massachusetts, not on a three-week event that's ten years away and really benefits others, not the people that live here. >> andy, you've looked at this and we put some of the statistics up there in the opening about the mon

marty walsh, the new player has been in office for years.inted the most experienced person he could find to oversee snow removal. right now, you know it looks like it's shaping up to be a fairly easy haul at least during the storm. it's going to come in at night. everyone has warning. you don't have the nightmare of people getting snowed in during the commute. for walsh. i am sure this is true of other big city mayors. the real test may come after the storm. how quickly and thoroughly do you get the snow out of will? what happens with the parking space savers? we are big on that in boston. you put the pylon, a kitchen sink or a half of a pan kin in the parking space you shoveled out claiming you own it. the city has banned that. that could lead to heavy duty conatlantic. >> that's interesting. it's not a bad idea until they ban it. obviously, people watch the snow. my brother is the governor of new york he is obsessive about situations like this. and you ask him why. he says this is a metaphor for people in government. either it works or it

marty walsh is the mayor of boston and joins us by phone. good morning to you. >> good morning. how are you today? >> fine. as luck would have it your city is in the bull's-eye. what are you dealing with now? >> 700 feet following the main arteries in boston and they are passible right now as far as emergency vehicles and keeping the street open. we will be on secondary roads and we have a good night, but the main bulk is hitting right now. >> i know that amtrak canceled trains up and down the corridor. the airport is shut down although maybe not closed. mass transit at a stand still. what are you telling the residents in terms of when they may be able to get out? >> not until later tonight or maybe tonight or tomorrow. we are asking people to stay put and check on their neighbors as they go out there and start shoveling. it's too early for that and not much places you can go. we have a police department who is taking nurses and doctors to work the best we can. we have our fire departments putting additional staff on and ambulances on for medical emergencies and we are asking pe
