labor secretary marty walsh, nice to have you back with us today.ight month that the u.s. added 12,000 jobs or more. my colleague was told this morning you may want the job market to slow down a little. would you agree with that? >> i heard that report this morning. i think we're going to see a normalization of job gain here in the united states at some point. we can't continue to gain at 400,000 to 500,000 jobs per month. i think the report was a little different reason for it but i think we will start to see changes here over time. obviously 95% -- we're back to 95% of employment in america from prepandemic levels. there is some work that we have to do as far as workforce development and job training. we saw a little tick down in the labor participation rate. for the future economy of america, we need to help skill up people and give them the ability to get into better paying jobs. >> those better paying jobs are key, as we look at inflation which is hitting so many people. that's what they see at the grocery store and paying their bills. even whe

marty walsh spoke about the upside surprises in payrolls. >> it is a good job support any time you go over projections. we still have some areas in manufacturing, transportation, which the numbers are good in, and continued strength. retail numbers are good as well and what is exciting about that is the fact that we often think about online shopping and we are actually starting to see the in-store shopping stronger than it has been in some time. jon: let's bring and former federal reserve economist and founder of stay-at-home order consulting, claudia sahm. let's start with your take away from the jobs report today, lessons learned by you or what it tells you about where we are in this economy. claudia: thank you. we have seen half a million jobs on average created for the past three months. if we center this on workers, it is important to have a paycheck back. there's a lot of hardship with the higher prices particularly at the pump and at the grocery stores, but we have to keep in context where we started in this crisis and we have made a lot of progress. but we are still making tha

labor and secretary marty walsh. secretary walsh, thank you so much being back with me. start here with the numbers we had today, weekly jobless claims up 19,000, the biggest weekly just since last july. are we entering a new phase of this recovery? >> reporter: well, yeah, i think we ought to see tomorrow what the job numbers look like. i think we have been very strong and steady and consistent adding jobs. people are leaving their jobs, looking for a better opportunity. i think we are in a worker's economy that is very, very interesting. we're seeing higher wages. we are seeing people leaving their jobs with different numbers, record people going back to work. if you can compare it to any other time in the history of our country. clearly, there is more to do in the department of labor, we are looking for job force and working with businesses, quite honestly. i spent a lot of time talking to businesses as well across the country to see what the needs are, what they are seeing, what we can do to help them. >> you see people leaving their job, the big quit as it's called

i want to bring in secretary of labor, marty walsh, to talk about this and a lot more.so much for being on the show. welcome. >> thanks for having me today. >> i know you have a lot on your plate. we were just looking at the big board with the dow basically erasing and then some some of the gains after yesterday's rate hike news with this expectation the fed's going to have to be more aggressive to try to get a handle on inflation. you're the labor secretary. what is your level of concern about the impact of inflation on the job market? >> certainly we're working on this every single day. when you look at the dow over the last few months here, it's been consistently up for the most part, but we have some of these ups and downs. what i'm focused on quite honestly is to continue to get people workforce development training. we're doing everything on supply chain. the president has given us directive to work together to do everything we can to bring down the cost at the kitchen table. certainly we're seeing these bigger numbers, numbers higher than we wanted to see. but we

back to the jobs report, 428,000 jobs added last month and marty walsh joins me now.te which came down. one of the bigger negatives in this report, 62%, you can't get everybody back to work. >> we solve a number go down, quite honestly we looked back since may of last year, first time the number went down, we know there's work to be done, the two reports before me, a lot going on in the economy. about uncertainty at the kitchen table, people concerned about prices and what we will do is what we asked today, to look into a granular research of those numbers to see if that participation rate, global number across the country, what can we do better at, more people engaged in the workforce and there's opportunities to look at this a little differently. stuart: the other modest negative, average earnings up 0.3%, expecting stronger than that, wages are not keeping pace with inflation. >> they are not keeping pace with inflation in leisure or hospitality outpacing inflation and when you look at the higher wages if you put it together 5.5% that is a pretty good increase for
