marvin kalb, let me start with you. this is a tough day for president nixon.had just asked his two top aides in the white house to leave-- h.r. halder man, and john ehrlichman. he had fired john dean, his legal counsel, send the resignation of his attorney general, and then he went on television. set the scene for us. >> the amazing thing to me is that he finally at this point recognized that from a political point of view, watergate was a big scandal that could tear his presidency to pieces. the sad part about richard nixon, though, is even though he recognized that-- and you would think at that point he would come to terms with it-- he goes on air that night on april 30 and delivers a speech filled with one lie-- forgive me-- after another. he would say, for example, that it was from a newspaper that he found out about watergate. that's nonsense. he would continue time and time again to mislead even when he knew that the evidence was clearly in another direction. >> woodruff: ken hughes, so what's the significance of these was getting for everybody he talked

journalism foundation. ♪ >> from the national press club in washington dc, this is the kalb report with marvin kalb >> hello and welcome to the national press club and to another edition of the kalb report. i am marvin kalb and our program tonight is remembering a march, a movement and a dream. the march on washington for jobs and freedom as it was officially called 50 years ago on august 28, 1963. the civil rights movement and what has dominated our headlines began to touch our national conscience. the i have a dream speech by martin luther king, one of the most powerful speeches in american history. many feared the march would turn violent, but it was in fact amazingly peaceful. here in black-and-white, on reality,n, and in 250,000 people bound together in a march for jobs, equality, thatce, probably up to time the largest demonstration on the washington mall ever. i was there to help cover this ofry, one in a small army cbs reporters. i remember being aware as i looked out at that spoke to -- swelling crowd, that this was more than a news story. it was a special moment in our national history op

i'm marvin kalb, and i'm resident senior fellow here at brookings and a senior adviser for crisis reportingich is hoe candidated just next door. -- located just next door. way back in august 2011, believe it or not that's only two years ago, congress passed and the president signed into law a legislative monstrosity called the budget control act. it was a way of doing something when nothing seemed worse. at least at that time. a joint select committee was set up to control the spiraling deficit, but congress warped that if the committee -- warned that if the committee failed to come up with a solution, sequestration would automatically follow meaning massive cuts in both defense and all other programs. those cults have now begun -- those cuts have now begun. the pentagon was already prepared to cut $150 billion over the next ten years. however, sequestration would require $500 billion in cuts over the next ten years. last week defense secretary hagel soberly warned that cuts of that magnitude would not only affect entitlements such as salaries, housing, education and the like, they would al

and, obviously, not going to choose told one path or the other, but given the question that marvin kalb asked about strategy, could you look at capacity and capability in that choice and tells i think it would affect strategy? >> thank you. thank you for an excellent question, and also for the good reminder which i agree with that the administration is not enthusiastic about these cuts. as i mentioned earlier, the police where i was having a slight difference with them was almost more tone. because they suggested that cutting the army down into the low four hundreds would follow the logic of the defense strategic guidance from last year. i do want to challenge that guidance a little bit. i think the notion that we can conclude that the air of large-scale counterinsurgency be over. that's a little bit of the ahistorical way of thinking about war. but beyond that i agree with your point. on issue of modernization and capacity versus capability, i'm glad you raised that. there so many different angles today. let me take one specific which is our friend the joint strike fighter. i like to s
