angeles is finally dying down. it's more than half contained thanks to 700 firefighters and easing winds. as maryng 100 mile an hour gusts. treacherous red flag conditions ripe for wildfires. >> we are seeing what we call a dirty burn. fire is kind of moving around in a lot of weird places. it's not a typical line of fire. >> reporter: sizzling hot temperatures are fueling fire fears up and down the west coast from washington to california. billowing smoke and bright red flames tore through 1,000 acres in less than 24 hours threatening homes in this suburb east of los angeles. more than 1600 homes, over 2500 people were forced to evacuate at the height of the danger. that order has now been lifted. >> right now we're just going to get out of here. it's not safe. >> reporter: santa ana winds so fierce here that helicopters normally used in a fire like this had to be grounded. over 700 troops are battling the blaze from the ground, in some cases right up to the homes. the good news here is that the winds are expected to die down, but there's always the fear that fresh gusts could fan the flames onc
