black boys. i love this woman. that's why in 2004 i was so ecstatic and honored to serve as an on a very cochair of the fundraising and then unveie statute of maryversity with rich black and harry rosen. what happened on that historic day was an out of body experience for me, and it was a phenomenal disbelief and wonderment. it's a story i will tell as long as i can. you see, the unveiling of the statute was onat the program bolded in gold for 12:00 noon. as things go, ceremony was running behind. because it was the convocation of the new president, and it was the 100th anniversary of the university. and the unveiling. i stepped outside to look at the statute to search for my name on the statue engraving next to the great doctor dorothy height, another esteemed cochair. when the clock bells chimed at noon, the sky above turned into night. we were overcome by clouds and thunder and hurricane strength wins. the wind roared through the campus and swept the burgundy velvet cloth covering the statue right off her body unveiling her glorious statute. there was nobody out there but to people. i couldn't believe it. next to me was albert bethune, her gr

wells marches in that parade and mary church terrell is marching in that parade and get a contingent to march in that parade. but the black women marching in the parade were much more threatened as well, more susceptible to violence, they were more susceptible even to critique from their fellow marchers. mary church terrell, also participated in the pickets in washington d.c. that i mentioned at the beginning. these are, as i said, the very first pickets at the white house, and they started putting these pickets together in january of 1917, which, as you might know, is the same year, the same month that the united states is entering world war i. so there's a lot of controversy over whether they should be doing this at the time. and i would argue that we need both these pickets and the publicity they attract, these photographs that are published across the united states. as you all know, they were ultimately arrested and went to work houses and went on hunger strikes and all of that garnered publicity, not to mention the fact that the president drove by them every day in and out of the white house to see them from his wind

ago, there was a discovery about this particular church in norfolk is the only black fossil in the nation called st mary's. it was created as a safe space for haitian refugees, both white and black. it was created about in 1794. this church that currently exists was actually built. in 1857. but there was a previous church, st patrick's church, same congregation that was built to to help provide support and safety for. these haitian refugees. well one of the people who was a member of the church was named mary olga, who later married a man named lou vest, and she was a member of st patrick's church. well, her father was a haitian refugee, and her mother was a free black from norfolk. and she lived in this area and eventually when she was an adult, she purchased the little boy who's also a haitian refugee, his name was marc rene de morti, and she did not free him until he was 21. because of that law that required that recently free people had to leave the state. so she held him until he was able to go back and forth to boston. and then so she emancipated him and during this time he and this is a picture of

mary church was born enslaved but she became one of the first women in the united states, first blacken in the united states for the bachelors and masters. also elected to be the first president of the association of colored women which was founded in 1896 and this organization is different from other suffrage organizations. they wanted the vote for women ander also speaking more broadly about gender and race based race-basedissues they were thint protecting the vote for black men who were losing on a broad scale in the south by the 1890s. they were thinking about antilynching and how to educate their children better. there was t a much more broad movement. and as you can see from this image. she was very interested in fashion and has an extravagant hat on herself in these images. fairly wealthy women in washington, d.c. at the time and you can see the similarities between her and this image from one of her speeches and this representation of you in idealized from 1904. it's not dissimilar in the hairstyle and address from the ideal that we were looking at just a moment ago. i like to
