sending republican cindy hyde-smith back to congress, and our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce the studio with more. good morning, mary. >> good morning, robin. overnight, cindy hyde-smith insisted she will represent all of mississippi after winning this race which was rocked by racial controversy. she came under intense fire for her comments on public hangings but last night she made clear she is eager to move on. she is now the first woman elected to congress in the state's history, and she told supporters she's a cowgirl who could roll with the punches, while her opponent, mike espy, conceding at the mississippi civil rights museum, urged his supporters to continue to raise their voices against injustice. this was the final senate race to be called, and it now gives senate republicans a net gain of two seats, expanding their majority to 53 seats to democrats' 47, while over in the house the democrats have flipped a whopping 39 seats, giving them a comfortable majority. >> is it a comfortable majority for nancy pelosi who faces a key vote in the house today? >> she is expecte

i asked abc's senior congressional correspondent mary bruce straight up, is this the day nancy pelosively becomes the speaker? >> to be quite blunt, yes, i think she will. this is sort of a prevote, if you will. the final vote doesn't happen for several more weeks, but what you have today is this vote amongst the democrats, right? so pelosi just needs to get a majority, and pelosi has, you know -- this has been an uphill battle for her. there has been a lot of elbow-twisting going on but we have seen this remarkable thing over the past couple of weeks that nancy pelosi has one by one been able to pick people off which is why nancy pelosi is, quite frankly, very good at this job and why many think she should hold this job because no one, no one whips votes like nancy pelosi, especially when it's votes for her. >> so what you're going to see today, guys, think of this like a primary. nancy pelosi will still need to win 218 votes on the house floor to become speaker in january, but this year is probably the biggest hurdle she will face. we will have a lot more on the congressional brinks

our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is in the capitol, and nelson not the only democrat to concede over the weekend. >> reporter: yes. remember, this was a bruising 12-day recount. it took lawsuits on both sides of the aisle, but we have those results down in florida as you mentioned. republican rick scott will be the state's next senator. the democrat, bill nelson, conceding yesterday after that manual recount showed him trailing by 10,000 votes. now, in the state's race for governor, democrat andrew gillum has conceded to republican ron desantis. while down in georgia democrat stacey abrams admits that republican brian kemp will be the state's next governor but, cecilia, she is refusing to call him legitimate. legal, yes, but amid concerns and accusations of voter suppression, abrams says, quote, something being legal does not make it right. >> she is still raising concerns there. mary, there is another political fight brewing over the fate of nancy pelosi who wants to be house speaker again but not all democrats are on board. >> reporter: by all our count, there are r
