so this is mary ellen carroll. we are not planning or will not be opening any cooling centers at this time. we have to remember, in our normal response plans, we have to -- >> mary ellen, it looks like you're on mute. >> dr. carroll, i believe you're on mute. >> thank you. that's probably not very helpful. thanks, everyone. the national weather service has issued a heat advisory for san francisco, with temperatures forecast in the upper 80s to low 90s today, and low to mid80s over the weekend. even during heat waves, we have to continue to protect ourselves and our community as we fight covid-19, so we are not going to be opening cooling centers for this heat wave. we are recommending san franciscans stay home if possible, and if temperatures within homes become elevated, we do -- we recommend people to go outside to find a cool place to be if at all possible. congregate sites are not recommended. congregate indoor sites are not spaced necessarily during covid-19, and so we it is better to follow other instructions

i'm mary ellen carroll, i'm the director of san francisco department of emergency manager. i'm joined by the director of the san francisco department of public health. san francisco and our region continues to experience poor air quality as a result of the many wildfires that are burning throughout california. we have been very busy over the last few weeks in 2020, and as a city, we are prepared to respond to all of the incidents that we continue to face during this time of covid. in the past seven days alone, we have dealt with a heat wave, dark skies, continued poor air quality. all the while, we are still responding to a global pandemic. yesterday, we reached purple, which is very unhealthy levels for air quality, and we expect to have this poor air quality today and potentially through the weekend. this means that active use adults and people with respiratory diseases should avoid any activity outdoors. everyone else, especially children, should avoid any prolonged exposure to the outside or heavy exertion. we recommend to consider moving activities indoor or reschedule
