let's bring in former fbi profiler mary ellen o'toole. en, welcome to the program on a very, very difficult day for newtown, connecticut, for the united states, for every parent out there. what do we know for the little that we know about the suspect? what can you deduce? >> well, from what i've heard so far, and it seems like it's changing every couple of minutes, is that the mother of this shooter was working or was an employee at the school. it's still a little confusing to me. i understand that she is also deceased. and what i'm hearing is that she was found at the school. so if that fact pattern is correct, that her son is the shooter, then what makes sense is that this really did start off as a familial problem, a dispute likely between the mother and the son, and it certainly escalated to unbelievable proportions. what they've been looking at right now is if that, in fact, is the case they would be looking for evidence of that search warrant and in the background that they are developing on both the mother and the shooter. >> mary e

. >> reporter: veteran fbi profiler mary ellen o'toole says the triggers for such random violence are not black and white. >> these shooters -- yes, can they have mental health issues? absolutely. but is the reason they're carrying out these crimes because they are mentally ill? i would say no. it's important to make that distinction because most people who are seriously mentally ill are far less violent than the general population. >> reporter: and you had never known him to want to hurt anyone? >> never. never. he never would hurt anybody. i mean, the only way that he would ever get him to be physically physical with you is if you're tickling him. >> reporter: today, the woman who raised roberts released this picture of the once happy little boy, who police say somewhere along the way turned from happy go lucky to dangerous and unpredictable. a family friend read a statement. >> she has no understanding or explanation for her son's behavior. she's very sad and wants everyone to know she is so sorry what jake did and it's so out of his character. >> reporter: tonight police are runni

joining us on the phone former senior fbi profiler, mary ellen o'toole.th of you thank you for helping on a difficult subject. what do you make of this story that the mother was going to send him to psychiatric institute and he got angry and that was one motive for his shooting her? >> well, that certainly could be one of the motives but what you mentioned earlier about the snapping would not in my opinion be correct. that this was not an impulsive crime. there was planning involved and the thoughts of suicide and homicide could have gone back many years in fact. but the planning is what is important. there was a period of time he was putting together a plan to carry out what he did on friday regardless of the stressor that may have occurred several days before. >> and don clark, among other things, the guy tried to destroy his computer, i guess he did destroy his hard drive. others are saying because the mother was friendly with the school principal and counselors there and that she loved the kids at the school more than thshe loved him. does that work f

mary ellen o'toole, a former fbi profiler and joins us from washington. good morning.or being here. >> good morning. thank you. >> i think that so many people are just trying to get a grip on who this kid was and why he did what he did. as a profiler, what have you come up with? >> well, looking at the available information about this case and really we look at the profilers the behavior at the crime scene, this crime really started days, weeks, or months before the event, and it appears from what i can see right now that it was thought out in a very strategic way, in a very logical way, and it was very cold blooded. there is just an enormous amount of callousness to this crime, and what that tells me is that if there were precipitating triggers in his life that made him decide that he is going to act out this way, i think the important point is that he knew what he was doing. he appeared to be in touch with reality and understood the consequences of his behavior. his intent was for maximum lethality which is a very cold word to comprehend. he wanted to kill as many pe
