joining us mary ellen o'toole, former f.b.i. profiler. good to see you. if these bombs were not made in tamerlan's cramped apartment he shared with his wife, could she possibly have simply turned a blind eye to it, rationalized it? or might she be implicated as a co-conspirator? >> it could be either one of those or somewhere in between. when you have a small area like that, it's absolutely logical that she would have seen something, heard something, smelled something. whether she looked at it as you say, she rationalized it or explain it away, that is possible. to say that she was completely oblivious to it, in my experience where husbands and wives live in a small area, the husband is involved in serious criminal activity, it's not likely the wife was completely unaware of what was going on. >> gregg: what if she was absolutely controlled by him? >> i think that is very good possibility. investigators are going to be looking at that. controlling is a process that takes a period of time. it's not just the overbearing and demeaning, but it's the process b

we're joined by mary ellen o'toole, retired senior profiler for the fbi.t do you make of this case? how unusual is it that the accused killers, one of whom has pled guilty are not just teenagers but teenaged girls? >> well, it is unusual. it's unusual because of their age. certainly when you see this kind of violence, it's most often perpetrated by males. but also, what's so stunning is that this homicide is so cold and calculated and then you have these girls that have inserted themselves into the investigation, presumably to monitor what's going on and maybe also for the thrill of it. so all of those three things combined is really pretty unusual. >> inserting themselves in the investigation and into the search with the family, consoling the family and stuff. >> that's very manipulative behavior. it's very callous behavior. from my perspective, with my experience, it's really strongly suggesting individuals who have a profound lack of empathy for the victim's family and the victim and a lack of guilt for what they've done. >> also, the reason these girls

joining me now retired criminal profiler, mary ellen o'toole.this american girl raised in rhode island said to be normal -- words used about her -- could somehow meet this guy, have his child and live in an 800 square foot apartment where he was making bombs and either sit idly by or knowing participate in it. with the caveat that her lawyer says she didn't know. your thoughts. >> well, my sense is that she is aware of something. the question is, how much is she aware of? even to the point how much did she participate, we've seen it in other cases, this woman is very compliant. this is not about the religion. it's about her personality in terms of her possibly being controlled by him. if you scrape away all of the other issues, it does sound like this could be a domestic abusive situation. she could have been intimidated by him up to and including hearing threats he would hurt the baby if she didn't keep her mouth shut or she didn't participate to a certain extent. now that is not to say, however, that if they determine her level of involvement,

joining me now by phone is mary ellen o'toole, a former fbi criminal profiler.e're very happy to have your expertise today. very good to see you or to hear you. what do you make of this guy? i mean, i know it's sort of a simple question, but also complex. what kind of a man can kidnap three women and keep them tied up in his house for ten years? >> sure. based on what i've heard so far, i would say that this offender is what we call a sexual saidist, and that's a very specific type of sex offender. these are the individuals that will kidnap their victims and they will keep them for hours, days, weeks, months, or years, and the whole motive behind them taking and keeping someone is because they're sexually aroused by the victims' response to the infliction of physical, emotional, or mental torture. they're extremely dangerous individuals. >> megyn: there are reports, and this is, you know, this story just broke late last night, but there are reports that these women were kept restrained, tie. i mean, for ten years? is that possible? >> well, they wouldn't be -- i
