mary jane, thank you for your time this had morning. i know we spoke with one of your representatives earlier and they said there are many, many shelters and many more that could be used. what do you want to convey toss people who need your help the most right now? >> well, we do absolutely have -- we've had trailers for the last few days coming in with food and cots and blanks to help more than 20,000 people. and our focus right now in the texas gulf coast and surrounding areas is just spacing. we've been saying for days be sure you prepare for this hurricane. be sure that you have an emergency kit that you heed evacuation, that your kids know where to go. it was about safety and please to call us if the they feel they need help. >> talk to in me about researchers in doing that. i know you have your number there, but some people don't have power, phone lines may be down, self-service may not be available. what is the best way, especially knowing this is a crucial time right now because it is dark, most of the area in the gulf coast and

mary jane, what is the situation there tonight? >> still a disaster operations center in houston where there are hundreds of volunteers who have been coming in the last couple of days and more and more each day and it is raining outside and you can hear the thunder and we've had tornadoes touched down today so we are continuing to get people prepared. we have many shelters on standby up and down the coast but the latest development is that we did determine with the city of houston, mayor turner to open up two of our soldiers now before hurricane harvey or tropical storm harvey gets really significant here. were expecting tremendous floodwaters. mike: the people of texas are in the thoughts and prayers of so many of us and people across the country. what do you want folks across the country want to be helpful to the people in texas to do at this point? >> we are so grateful for the well wishes we been receiving and certainly the volunteers were coming from around the country. if you don't live in this area donations still are very h

i'm here with mary jane mudd, spokesman for the american red cross. mary jane, you've been helping to coordinate all of this. tell us what capacity is in this area. a lot of people are still getting rescued. will there be enough room for everybody? >> the american red cross has been planning this for not only the past few weeks but all the time. shelters on standby for something like this. as far as the numbers go, what i can tell you is up and down the texas gulf coast we sheltered more than 6,000 people last night in a variety of shelters hit by this terrible storm. as far as the george r. brown convention center where we are, we were able to house 2,500 and it has capacity for 5,000. this isn't all there is. houston say huge city. other shelters are open or being opened around the city. >> talk to us about supplies. i know that there's a lot of need here. a lot of people. i talked to mothers who had to, in essence, rescue their children from these waters and carry them through these deep waters. there's a lot of need. do you have enough supplies? a

i spoke with mary jane mudd from the convention center where they're providing shelter and aid.nk you very much for joining us. i know you're extremely busy. give us an overview of the red cross response to harvey so far. >> the response has been astronomical because the storm has been astronomical. the it hit us in south texas and made its way here to houston. last night, we provided shelter for over 1600 people in 34 shelters up and down the texas gulf coast. now, in this shelter, 2900 people and currently there are 3800 people here who have registered today. it's growing and growing and growing. it is just -- it's just major. i have lived here 25 years and i have never seen anything like it. there's water lapping at our front door, my husband informed me as well. we live about a half hour away. but my heart is broken for those who are here. because they've lost everything. the red cross is all about the response to this sort of thing, we've been planning for this. we had supplies coming in. terrors, emergency response vehicles, enough food and hygiene products and comfort ite
