so here comes mother mary joseph, who had a vision for women being able to work, as the priests were doing, all over the world in a mutual and equal capacity. this was a revolutionary way of working, certainly, for women religious, but it had been molly rogers' vision from the beginning. she was one of the three founders of maryknoll, along with father price and father walsh. now, they had to have permission from rome, but rome thought that american women were too soft. in fact, the women who joined maryknoll were feisty and strong and courageous. [ laughter ] dorsey: i didn't go in immediately after high school -- i was 18 1/2... [ laughs ] ...but a sophisticated new yorker. whether nursing would come first or the mission first -- that i wasn't sure of, but i jumped at the vocation.
