mary katharine ham, with "the daily caller" and fox news contributor.iams is a fox news political analyst. juan, it is my understanding you don't think these remarks from the president are a real big deal. why? >> well, i think it is obvious the senate would have to confirm any kind of deal that the president made with the russians or anybody else on nuclear missiles, jon, but the larger point is this. everybody knows that once the president gets reelected he has more political capital. the american people have shown faith in that person, whether it is george w. bush after the '04 election or potentially barack obama after the election this year, after 04, president bush came back and introduced changes to social security. he knew it was controversial but he was willing to put that political capital on the line. it didn't fly. what president obama is saying that he knows it is an uphill struggle to get some of these missile defense treaties through the senate but he thinks he will have added capital after this election. all you're hearing from karl rove

jon: joining us for a fair and balanced debate, fox news political analyst juan williams and mary katharine"the daily caller". also a fox news contributor. mary catherine, can gas buyers, motorists take the price of gas and lay their complaints about it at the white house door? >> well i think it is tricky to know exactly who is at fault. just as silly to blame entirely oil companies and blame entirely the president as democrats were very generous in doing with bush back in those days and republicans apt to do with obama. it is complicated situation. the argument you can make, barack obama is not helping situation. the keystone is no-brainer for people struggling with gas prices looking like this is a way you can help with our actual allies and perhaps doesn't happen right this moment but something can happen in the future. and they look at that, go, what? they hear secretary chu testifying hey, not really our policy to help bring gas prices down. it is our policy to wean you off of oil. these are things republican nominees and candidates have not been great bringing onto the campaign trail

mary katharine ham, daily caller and fox news contributor and juan williams a fox political analyst. ith you it, mary katherine. we get talk about big government, big government. are we confused? maybe people want some of these regulations. at least that is what the poll might be suggesting. >> you get some of the divide you also see with spending when people say i want to cut spending but you ask them which things they want to cut and hard to figure that out. the american public has the disconnect sometimes. but i think what you're seeing here on a lot of sort of simple things like texting while driving, that kind of thing, people go, that is clearly safety issue. i'm okay with that. i think what is greater concern we have a gigantic regulatory state on the state level, local level, federal level, constantly growing. people adding regulations all the time. not really thinking about the cost benefit analysis or whether they actually work. these things almost never have sunset qualities so it piles up and piles up because a bunch of vain politicians say i'm going to solve the problem.

[cheers and applause] jon: let's talk about it with mary katharine ham, a contributor to the daily callertor. peter mirajanian. former advisor to the clinton-for and gore-lieberman campaigns? would you like to see newt gingrich out of the race? >> first thing any analyst needs to ask themselves when they're asked should newt get out of the race, is he standing right behind me? then deal with it. so here's the thing. for conservatives i think many conservatives believe they want a more conservative candidate than romney. at this point, newt is banking on the fact that many of them think he is that guy. but the polling and actual wins and delegate count don't really show that. i think santorum certainly has the better rationale for continuing and if it is gingrich and santorum splitting the conservative vote as it has been to some extent until now, that behooves romney. i'm not sure that works for conservatives. gingrich is banking on nobody wants anybody to be pushed out of the race and that is argument he is making and a lot of conservatives are looking at it and not giving his strategy.
