in louisiana, democrat mary landrieu lost yesterday's runoff election to bill cassidy by a large margin, bolstering the republican's control of the senate. cassidy promised to seek the repeal of the affordable care act throughout his campaign. with cassidy's victory, the republicans have gained a total of nine senate seats, giving them 54 senators and firm control going into the new session of congress. two more louisiana republicans won their runoff elections for u.s. house seats. landrieu's loss means louisiana will not be represented by a democrat in the u.s. senate for the first time in 131 years. and the u.s. birth rate has reached an all-time low, as women wait longer to have children. this, according to the centers for disease control. birth rates for women over 35 reached the highest levels in about 50 years. birth rates for women between the ages of 15 and 44 have dropped 10% since 2007. the sharpest drop occured among teens whose birth rates fell 10%, just in the last year. >> sreenivasan: we're learning more about that failed hostage rescue attempt in southern yemen. u.s. spe

louisiana, the polls are open in the senate run-off between democratic senator mary landrieu and republican congressman bill cassidy. landrieu is in a fight for her life, hoping to pull out another win. kasey hunt is joining me now. kasey, with a good day to you, everybody's saying it's a foregone conclusion that senator landrieu is going to lose. is that the case? >> you never want to make foregone conclusions until the voters have their say. but i think we'd all be surprised to see senator landrieu pull this out. this has been a situation where essentially everyone's abandoned her. as soon as she lost in that jungle primary, that's what louisiana had. on election day in november, it was her and two other candidates. and she ended up in the run-off with bill cassidy, who's a congressman. national democrats pulled their ads down off the air immediately. they haven't gone back in for her. she's been fighting sort of tooth and nail from capitol hill to try to do what she can to help herself. she pushed for a vote on the keystone pipeline. she got the vote but she didn't get enough to pass it through the senate. ever
