mary lee is tracking the storm. mary? >> reporter: all eyes are on this powerful storm. you can see the outer bands now reaching the carolina coast there. i want to show you the latest on hurricane florence. as michelle mentioned, it is a category 3 storm with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. it is currently 435 miles southeast of wilmington north carolina to the northwest at 60 miles per hour, it does not look like it strengthened. this is the projected path with hurricane florence. strengthening backup to a category four storm before it reaches the carolina coast. likely it will make landfall as a major hurricane. we are lookro storm surge as well as damaging flooding. those are the impacts associated with hurricane florence, as much as 10 feet and major hurricane landfall with significant inland flooding with 10-20 inches of rain in some spots, possibly 30- 40 inches of rain. melissa? >>> widespread evacuations underway in virginia and the carolinas as hurricane florence inches closer. >> reporter: it appears the majority of people have heated the warnings and e

live at the oakland airport, mary lee, kpix5. >>> new video tonight way out as flames tear through her apartment. the fire broke out late this afternoon in a building on 48th avenue near ocean beach. kpix5's joe vazquez on the danger for first responders as they race to get everyone out alive. >> reporter: the fire started on the second floor of this apartment building. witnesses say it grew quickly and people became trapped inside. >> people are stuck. >> she was great. >> get a ladder up there. >> reporter: as firefighters arrived, a woman on the third floor was screaming for help. paul bridgers says the flames were roaring up from the second floor and she had no way to escape. >> a lady was next-door above, above the fire. she's banging on the window and then they got the ladder up there to get her. >> reporter: a firefighter eventually picked her up and rung by rung slowly carried her down the ladder to safety. she was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, as was a san francisco police officer who along with another cop were first on the scene. >> both officers ran into the building.

our mary lee is tracking the storm right now. have been talking about how powerful the storm is and the dangerous impact. the weather service in wilmington, north carolina, is calling florence the storm of a lifetime for the carolina coast. that is how dangerous the storm is. you can see the satellite imagery. and still a major hurricane. a category four storm. wins at 130 miles per hour. moving west, northwest at 70 miles per hour. anwill mdirect landfall as a category 4 storm. a major hurricane there. and likely the impacts and storm surges, and flooding as well as damaging winds. so, looking at life threatening flooding in the area. we are also trapping tropical storm olivia. it's getting close to hawaii and is a tropical storm with winds at 45 miles per hour. it will cause heavy rain and flooding for the islands later on today as it moves in that direction. we will talk more about our weather at home coming up took >>> a man is describing a confrontation with a former police officer who was accused of driving a stolen car ont

mary lee is watching the storms play out. >>> we're tracking the only hurricane florence, but hurricane olivia and to storms behind florence. there's a lot going on in the tropics. it is really heating up for us. we have hurricane florence behind that. hurricane isaac, and then hurricane helene, all of the storms behind florence are category 1 storms. will see the latest on hurricane floors. it is a category 2 hurricane. battle sustained winds at 105 miles per hour. it is looking like increase risk of life-threatening impacts with florence due to dangerous storm surge, damaging hurricane force winds, and flooding. it will continue to strengthen as a category three storm later today. than a category 4 storm and likely making landfall as a category 4 storm by the south carolina coast there. the north cared -- north carolina coast, or virginia. we're watching this locations for the possibility of a direct impact as a category 4 storm. we're tracking hurricane olivia out the pacific. it will likely we can from a category 1 storm today down to a tropical storm. the islands are a tropical sto
