mary nichols, let's begin with you. what exactly is the trump administration trying to do?y: well, they announced almost two years ago their goal which is to eradicate the standards that had been voluntarily agreed to by the state, the federal government, and the auto industry under president obama. so this is part of the broader campaign to erase from the books every accomplishment really of the obama administration but in this case , the argument was that they needed to give relief to the auto industry by eliminating the standards which required the industry to produce slightly more efficient, cleaner cars every year going back to 2012 and out to 2025. so what they're doing is they're just stopping the program where it is instead of moviving ahead. amy: so what is the response of these auto companies? usually you're on the other side of these companies, demanding that they be regulated but it seems now you're coming together on the same side that the trump administration has united you. mary: well, the industry having agreed to these standards in the first place did ask f

marie. let's start with hans nichols at the white house. any sense soft when, how, or if the white house will plan to respond to the new subpoena it has received from the house committee including the ones from last week? >> reporter: if is probably the best question there. from the white house's perspective, talking to senior official just moments ago, they refer to this as a faux impeachment. there is a sense they want to almost dare the democrats to take this to the next level and even then, their cooperation isn't assured. you mentioned that letter talked about in nbc news reported last week, it's unclear if that letter or multiple letters are going to be sent to the congress to make sure they have certain obligations in the white house's view to do certain things before they get the full cooperation from the white house. now, one thing you don't hear from the white house is any talk of trying to prevent either the pentagon or the state department from either producing documents or making potential witnesses available for testimony. as

marie yovanovitch, the former u.s. ambassador to ukraine. back with us, chris lu who served as senior official in the obama white house tom nichols.at are you looking at for this coming week putting on a couple of your old hats? >> a lot of people thought it was mistake for democrats to go into recess and they would lose their focus. they haven't. they have continued to build the public case for impeachment. not only the volker deposition but the subpoenas they issued for the white house and the state department. the challenge is for republicans. last week they were able to dodge a lot of questions about the president's comments on china. there will be more information that will come out, more documents will go out there. the news reports there might be a second whistle-blower out there. it's continuing to stay on message. focus all of their attention on ukraine and the other trump scandals. >> tom, i'm going to focus on the ambassador to ukraine. how essential is she to this proce process? >> i think the questions around her will be timing. what was she removed? what was she told at the time? what okbjections did she raise? these
