good evening, i'm marybeth marsden. police are looking for at least one man coning people out of hundreds of dollars but posing as a city worker and threatening to shut off their water. brian kuebler spoke with one victim. >> reporter: the latest scam is as simple as it is clever. baltimore city police are warning that a man dressed up as a city employee is telling residents to pay up the exact amount of their water bill or they will be shut off. >> we learned about this, actually -- end of last week and yesterday we found we have our potential first victim. >> reporter: we spoke to that victim by phone today who tells us the man was dressed up like a city worker and knew exactly how much she owed. he asked for the money in cash, she paid the $500. we're convinced this victim was -- hop on the baltimore city web site, click on "look up water bill" information, type in an address and there's the outstanding balance. a fairly new feature but one also useful to crooks. >> there are instances where people do have notificati

i'm marybeth marsden. anne arundel county police arrested the pair after rescuing 21 abused dogs from their home on sea breeze drive. abc2 news jeff hager has more now on efforts to crack down on such abuse. >> reporter: a wretched smell led police to this cluttered home on sea breeze drive where they discovered the dogs in various degrees of distress. >> unfortunately there were feces piled up in the house. it was inhabitable for humans and animals. [barking] >> reporter: veterinarians had to euthanize one of the dogs while the other 20 still show visible signs of abuse and neglect it appears they will survive. >> they are doing well. they are progressing nicely. we're treating them for worms andfully -- and flea infestation. many of them came in hairless and they seem to be recovering nicely. >> reporter: police arrested 61-year-old janet taylor, her adult son jeffrey and each facing 42 counts of animal cruelty and inflicting suffering or pain on an animal. they are now free on bail staying in a house ne

i'm marybeth marsden. it happened overnight at a home where several students live, at the corner of university parkway and university place. abc2 news linda so tells us more. >> reporter: it was a chaotic scene overnight. this was shot moments after police surrounded the home where an intruder was killed with a samurai sword. >> it was a gruesome situation in the backyard. >> reporter: police say four undergraduate hopkins students were in this house 1:30 tuesday morning when they heard a noise. one student grabbed a sword and went out back. the suspect tried to get in through the backyard. you can see part of the fence has been ripped up. neighbors say they called 911 after hearing commotion and someone screaming get away from me! police say the suspected burglar was in the garage. the suspect lunged at the student and in self-defense the student fought back, nearly severing the suspect's hand and cutting his body. the suspect died on the scene. >> oh, my goodness. that is horrible. i mean, people nowaday

i'm marybeth marsden. good evening. this appears to be a family tragedy. let's get to mount airy, terry owens is standing by live. terry. >> reporter: it's the kind of community where kids play in the street, and neighbors check on neighbors. in fact, that's how this terrible tragedy was discovered. state police say a concerned family friend made a gruesome discovery at this home in mount airy by peering in a window and spotting a body. a call to state police who had entered the home would find a mother, father, sister, and brother all found dead in the little home tucked at the end of contour road. police have not identified the victims as yet, but of course everybody in the community knows who they are. the tragedy has stunned the community, the streets filled with neighbors wondering what happened and in shock that the family is gone. the speculation this is a possible murder/suicide but this investigation is still wide open. >> my first thought was the kids. you don't want to see that happen to kids. you don't want to. and everybody has been down here

i'm marybeth marsden. police say 29-year-old terry johns died after injecting herself with a drug used to treat heroin addicts but she was not an addict. it appears she was using the drug recreationally. crist >> reporter: they were both researchers who studied the effects of drugs at the university of maryland medical school here in baltimore. now, police say based on their work, they certainly should have known the dangers of injecting prescription drugs and if they didn't, they chose to ignore them. neighbors say they didn't hear much from the couple who lived in this home just blocks from the university of maryland medical campus. monday this man, clinton mccracken called 911 and said his girlfriend carrie johns had overdosed. she was pronounced dead a short time later. mccracken told police that johns had injected a solution of a drug called bupe. police believed mccracken ordered the drugs online from a pharmacy in the philippines. >> they would come in stuffed animals, drugs like bupe, oxycontin, ox
