maryellen resendez is live to explain what this means. >> reporter: this is a pretrial conference. i just got off the phone with the family's attorney. he said they will be discussing evidence as far as what will go into the trial. afterwards the family will meet at the front steps here of the courthouse with reporters to let us know what happened . the mother is accused of stabbing her three sons to death before trying to kill herself. at her last court hearing, octavia rogers was visibly shaking in court. her family was standing by her side. rogers could barely say her name when asked by the judge. the family is expected to be at her side this morning. rogers' family has contended all along that she was a good mother and this was very much unlike her. we just spoke with a family's family will speak after the court hearing as they decide in the court hearing what may or may not be said at trial. maryellen resendez, abc15 news. >>> a crime alert to pass along as the hunt is on for an 18-year-old accused of robbing a pop a murphy's in anthem. he was wearing a bandanna and was armed

maryellen resendez is joining us live from the scene this morning. we are hearing this homeowner may have confronted the suspect? >> reporter: that's exactly what mesa police are saying. this is the house you can see where that white suv is. the owner we are told came home and found at least two men inside her house. there was some type of scuffle and then at least one of those men were able to get away. one was arrested by mesa police almost on the spot. police cars racing off to a different location. i followed them. and in a neighborhood just southwest of here, they have another man detained right now. they haven't said whether they have made the second arrest. they are questioning two other men in this house. it appears they have been able to trace this home burglary to another house just southwest of this neighborhood, just like right over baseline, not that far from here. th earlier when they had this neighborhood blocked off. this all happened before our eyes. when we arrived, most of the neighborhood was blocked off and they were looking for

abc 15's maryellen resendez is near 83rd avenue and lower buckeye road where it all can you clear it up for us? >> reporter: phoenix police believe the shooters were actually right here in this park, and they say they shot from the park. now, the teen party was just across the street where you're seeing right now, the homeowners who we spoke with asked us not to identify them, with the they told us -- but they told us they don't know why or if their party was the target. >> everybody is making it look like it started from here, that we were the bad guys, we've it was an innocent birthday party for our grand daughter. there was no alcohol served here or drugs found in here. >> reporter: now police say the 15-year-old's birthday has been advertised on social media. but the homeowners say it just got way out of hand with unwanted guests. then all of the sudden the gun fire erupted. now one of the adults at the party was arrested, he was firing from the party's location, but the homeowners say it was in self-defen >> that's what the kids were saying. he said get on the ground, get inside

maryellen resendez has been with the family, and joins us now from lake pleasant, and it's going to be so difficult for them. >> reporter: very, very emotional day for them especially now that the sun starting to set, and it's late into the day, and still no good word. the family has been arriving and they're also taking, you know, obviously some action on their own. the 24-year-old was boating with a prudent person of friend on sunday when he got -- group of friend on sunday when he got lost and never made it back to the boat. when friends returned to where they were swimming they tried to look for him, but he was gone. sheriff deputies used a sonar system and robot to search the searched by air, but had no luck. >> he was a dreamer and we still believe that he's alive and well somewhere, we just don't know where, and we're hoping and praying that we can find him. >> reporter: now the family has rented a couple of boats. the marina has also given them a boat to go out, and also help deputies. they're also searching the edge handing out the posters, and they have a psychic now helping

maryellen resendez talked to the student and the company to get answers. let's start with the student. this. >> reporter: patel is a student here at asu, and he says he doesn't want to slam samsung, but when his cell phone spontaneously come busted it had -- come busted it had so much smoke it set off the fire alarms in his apartment. >> it was the freakiest accident. >> reporter: he knew something wasn't right. >> i hear sizzling first and smell this definitely burning smell. i thought at first, but then a second after, the intense burning sensation hit my thigh. >> reporter: at same time the smoke was rising into his face, and that's when he realized the burn was coming from his cell phone. >> tried to get my pants off as fast as i could, and then my room was filled with smoke. >> reporter: he was streeted for an acid burn -- treated for been worse. the screen actually buffered the burn. >> my screen was face down to my thigh. if it was the other way around, you have images of my floor. that would have been my leg. >> reporter: he hosted what happened on

abc15's maryellen resendez is live at the scene for us. what are you finding out from your sources. >>> you know, detectives have just arrived to the scene, nick. in fact, they have also brought a demand van which tells us they're going to be out here for quite a while investigating. we don't have an update on the condition of the homeowner. he is in extreme critical condition. at this point we don't have an update as to how he's doing or whether he's in surgery or not. but what we know from police is that the homeowner about 4:30 this morning was leaving to work. he came outside of his house, and somehow or another got into a confrontation with two suspects. no one knows exactly what the confrontation was over. one of the suspects pulled a gun and shot him point-blank in the chest. we know that there was a woman inside the house that called 911. and that's when police responded out here to the scene. now, we have been talking with neighbors.
