maryellen resendez is joining us with more. were officers injured in this? >> reporter: we are told all the officers are going to be okay. according to police, those three officers surrounded the vehicle you see here. this is the suspect's vehicle. we understand they did some nd they say they knew the driver was armed and at one point they felt threatened. that's when a neighbor looked out his front window. >> he was about 55 years old. we suspected it was a drug- related incident. >> reporter: police say this actually started with a shooting that happened on thursday, where they say the driver, who was the suspect, man. he was about 55 years old and that man was shot dead. when they caught up with this man yesterday and started following him, he began to speed up in the neighborhood. that's when they did what is called a pit maneuver and one of the neighbors was looking out the window. >> one of them went up one car into the front card. the other is right in front. i went out to see. figured someone is hurt. sounded like parked car or something, so i ran ou

maryellen resendez is live at the county jail, and how tough was it to find the culprit? >> reporter: you know, it wasn't tough at all to not even just find the culprit but have him put in jail. mitchell actually used an app called find my phone, and she could actually track her electronics going across town. >> super anxiety and everything. making sure the doors are for her birthday when she came home, and something was amiss. >> i looked at my husband like what the heck is going on. where's this, where's that? >> reporter: several of their tablet, phones and chargers and other small electronics were missing, and then michelle put the find my phone app to use, and reported it stolen to apple. >> i got an e-mail saying hey, it's been turned on, this is where it's at. >> reporter: her tablets were pinging across she and her husband jumped in the car and called police. officers soon caught up. >> the guy actually rolled his bike upright behind our car with my tablet. >> reporter: thompson was the man on the bike, and the tablet recorded his every stop. >> it looked like he

maryellen resendez is joining us live tonight, and you found out where it's going to be held, and who else is going to speak? >> reporter: that's right, just a short time ago his camp confirmed he'll be at the phoenix convention center at starting to line up the speakers. looks like he's lining up a lot of the victims or people who were killed by illegal immigrants, including mesa officer brandon mendoza. we arrived moments ago to speak to his mother. let me give you a little background on officer mendoza. it happened in 2014. he was just getting off his shift with the department traveling home near the 60 and the i-10 interchange when he was hit by a wrong way driver. that wrong way driver, an illegal immigrant. he had something like three times the legal limit of intoxication, including drugs, so it was a sad event for the mesa police department. and of course it took a lot away from mary ann, his mother. she'll speak with trump as he immigration referendum, and also several other speakers. we've spoken to a lot of them, and more is coming up at 6:00. and this is common to what he's

. >> and maryellen resendez has been on top of this story since it break this what's the update? >> reporter: phoenix police say the shooting actually stems from another shooting that happened last night. we have video of that shooting. that happened about 8:30 p.m. near 75th drive. we're told two men who knew each other got into an altercation. witnesses say they heard an argument, then one shot the from family members and that led them to this second location. it is here that police confronted that suspect. >> the suspect chose to come out of the closet and immediately attack the officer, which caused him to defend himself. >> reporter: again, we're back out here live at the apartment building. we are told this tip came from family members, which brought they had a search warrant to search the apartment. there were five officers that went into the apartment. this is one of the apartments in the back here. when he got into the apartment, according to the officer, he said that suspect actually lunged at him with a knife, cutting his hand. we are told he has a cut across two of hi

maryellen resendez talk with people that live nearby. >> grabbed my wife and we went to the pact room. >> reporter: residents take cover after shots ring out close by. it all started with one of the residents sent a text to family telling them she and her two children needed help. her ex-boyfriend allegedly showed up to her apartment, high on drugs and with a gun. police responded in full force. >> the woman opened the door, then the subject appeared in the hallway. the suspect presented a gun, pointed it at the officers, and one of the officers fired on the suspect ending the threat. >> reporter: and the 25-year- old man's life. unsure of what lay inside, officers quickly got neighbors out of their apartments into leave everything, wallet and everything inside. >> we do the best we can to approach safely taking victims' safety into account before our own, and the unpredictability of the suspect, so that's on our minds, and we must be ready for it. >> reporter: for extra precaution a a nine officer was -- canine officer the women and her children are -- woman and her children are safe

abc15's maryellen resendez live at the federal courthouse this morning, all stemm racial profiling cases. what do the victims have to say about this. >> reporter: they have been waiting for this recommendation for quite a long time. they have attended every proceeding here at federal court. now they will wait once again while the u.s. attorney looks over the case, and decides whether or not to go forward with the criminal attempt charges on sheriff joe arpaio. judge murray snow listed the evidence against sheriff arpaio, including the orders he says sheriff joe arpaio and top now he is also recommending the county put aside $500,000 to compensate racial profiling victims. but that's not all for the first time in sheriff arpaio's career, he's being ordered to pay $300,000 of his own bank account to what he termed as putting the sheriff's skin into this game. >> this is like poetic justice. you thought you could ride the backs of taxpayers forever. and do what you wanted to forever. but now it's on your shoulders. >> he makes it very clear that sheriff arpaio needs to have skin in the game

let's get right out to maryellen resendez, you have been following this case every step of the way. this morning, what are you finding out? >> well, it's in the u.s. judge murray snow handed down the ruling friday from federal court here. it's a recommendation, and he is recommending that the federal government hold sheriff joe arpaio in contempt, criminal contempt of court which could lead to a huge fine, even jail for america's toughest sheriff. but first, the u.s. attorney's office is going to look at that case, and determine whether or not to charge sheriff joe arpaio for criminal contempt. his attorney telling abc15 that if those charges are filed, despite ongoing legal issues, his client will not take any type of plea deal. even if arpaio is successful in his current campaign for reelection, putting it simply, he says, that sheriff arpaio is going to fight this to the end. >> you plea if you violated contemptuously, willfully, the order of the court. wasn't done that, there's --
