i thought it was ironic that jefferson and mason were the two great law-givers in the united states. neither one of them signed the constitution. jefferson wasn't present at the time. and george mason spent the entire time at the constitutional convention and at the end of that time, still refused to affix his signature to the document itself. as i was teaching school, i insisted every one of my kids had to say why mason didn't sign the document and it was because the document did not have a bill of rights. i was always hoping one of my students would always ask what i think is a significant question which is why did mason did not sign but why washington, franklin, mad ison, hamilton, wilson, why did they not go along with mason and add a bill of rights intohe base document. it was certainly not because these founding fathers did not believe in the idea of individual liberty, but they had another method, another mechanism that they thought more specific than actually listing down what our rights are and are not. it was the structure of government. though not specifically named in the
