morng, matt shapiro joins us. >> good morning. >> you're talking about one of my favorite topics todayth gold. what do you think is ahead for us? >> barrett gold is one of the biggest gold producers in the world. it was up big yesterday when gold finally came back to about 10 extent five an ounce. it correlates with the stock market. yesterday's stock market action with that cover we finally had from this correction and choppy trading puts gold to where i'm attracted to it. i'm buying shares in barrett gold at three or four months low. >> some people might have missed in getting in on gold and gold stocks at the right time. are you finding that now is the time? >> exactly. i'm kind of one of them. i'm not a big commodity. >> i wasn't going to name names. >> i've never been a big commodity's investor. when you can buy these stocks at about a two or three month low, that's a decent entry point, certainly far better than it was when everybody was playing the moment for instance, like barrett was $4,500. i think there are some mitigating factors going against the commodity play right now.

matt nesto, no impact on the stock. >> simon hobbs, as well as rick santelli.ou were answering rick because he's saying he was not buying the story here? >> rick may not buy it f. you do an exhaustive study of history when it comes to deflationary depressions -- >> look ahead, ron, look ahead. >> i'm about to. i just need to be able to finish the sentence in order to do that. in order to look ahead, you to look at the past. policy mistakes made in the u.s. in the 1930s or japan in the 1990s are quite instructive insofar as in neither case were deficits big enough to counteract the deflationary pulse. i think the problem here is while many people are concerned about the size of the deficits, as long as they're being accommodated by monetary policy, they will be reflation their. as soon as the world starts to tight el we'll go through a herbert hoover 1937 type experience, where if you balance a budget during a recession, depression or deflation, it is absolutely fatal. and history has shown that. >> what is fatal is when you spend all the money you could have us

up next, matt nesto will tell us how stocks could react to that kind of selloff tomorrow.in a moment. >>> the s&p 500 down better than 30 points. this is the sixth time in six months that the s&p has dropped more than 2% in sangal session. it broke a number of critical levels here. it broke 10,071 and now it broke 10,065. people are looking to these levels for support. let's look back to see what history tells us about tomorrow, let alone next week. mat nesto has been looking backwards to find clues. matt, what are you seeing and how significant in your view is that break in support in 10,065? >> it's going to be significant. but 10,035 is more significant. that marks actually 10%. until we get there, these milestones down, they hold until they don't. this is the sixth time in six months that we've had a drop of 2% or more in the s&p 500. interestingly, if you take a look at what's been going on and with the chart, each time within a week we had succumbed or eclipsed where we were prior to it. that, of course, speaks to a bull market that we had. if you take a look at the

joining me now is matt iglesias, a fellow at the certain terre for american progress. how significant is senate majority leader harry reid's statement on this? >> it's fairly significant. it shows that no one in the leadership, nor the white house or the senate, wants to rule out a public option. but of course, the question has been the centrist democratic senators. that was the problem the last time around with the public option. and it is still the problem today. you have 20 senators signing on to a letter but need at least 50. >> what was the count in terms of senators supporting a public option before it was traded away? how many votes did they think it could get before? >> well, this is what no one is quite clear on. there were two to four senators who took the fall for killing the public option. there's always been a suspicion among people who report on this, who cover it, that the broader number of democratic senators weren't thrilled with the idea. they were happy to have it be joe lieberman's fault. now the question is how many are there that want to take resp
