matt is in canton, oklahoma. matt, what have you seen? >> reporter: diane, these tornadoes pummeled oklahoma today. >> it is large and in charge, right now, gentlemen. >> reporter: we saw at least three separate twisters. one had multiple vertices. right now, that tornado is picking up everything in that field, leaves, pieces of trees. one tornado we saw measured winds of over 150 miles an hour. that one nearly hit canton, oklahoma. sirens wailed, but onlookers still rushed out to the road to try to get a glimpse of it. you can smell fresh cut grass. that's because all of these trees have been torn by that tornado. another town was nearly hit but no sirens there. now, these storm chasers have been hunkering down in their trucks, also barrels down these roads, trying to find the tornadoes. two people were killed after a tornado slammed into a oklahoma city suburb at rush hour. three children also critically hurt. it got so bad, they ran for cover at the national weather center in norman, oklahoma. search and rescue teams are being sent out

matt gutman leads us off in joplin tonight. matt, good evening. >> reporter: hey, good evening, david. you'll find a lot of those heroes here at the new st. john's hospital. now, you visited the brick and mortar version across the street, that shell of a building. this place is now operational and it speaks to the resilience of these people. but all around, 13 miles of devastation, and that's what the president saw today. block after block after block. this is what the president saw on his drive in. disorienting sea of shattered homes and splintered trees. the street signs, the landmarks, gone. the president assured the victims of this tornado the whole country is with them. >> this is just not your tragedy. this is a national tragedy. and that means there will be a national response. >> reporter: and later on at joplin's community memorial, the president reminded us that -- >> there are heroes all around us. all the time. they walk by us on the sidewalk and they sit next to us in class. >> reporter: and while the president lik

matt bigler is live in san jose to explain. matt, good morning. are they not watching us? straight to facebook to find ou what's happening? >> reporter: more people are getting news on facebook. one of our editors said not just news story, professional news stories but news from friends and family. he found out about the death of a close friend from facebook unfortunately this past week and that was sort of a wake-up call for him about how facebook is changing society. but today's story is about news stories. and we're talking about three percent of all the news content -- i should say, the 3% of the top news sites where they are receiving visitors from facebook is now coming from facebook. that's compared to about 30% from google. we'll talk more about that in just a second. 3% not a huge number but kcbs's tech analyst, larry magid, says it is growing rapidly for two main reasons. >> number one, facebook is getting bigger. a lot more new sites are putting the like button on the story. it's so easy to say hey, i like this story and if you're a friend of mine, you might lik

matt gutman joins us live from joplin. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin.200 names on that list. on this block alone, four families missing. we took that list and went to nine different addresses. our first stop went to zachary willi williams. 12 years old. he was confirmed dead. however, we kept going. knocked on doors. talked to neighbors. we found the sherrick family. four members of the family had been living down the street. i took all of this information to tommy sherrick. gave him the hotline for missing persons. he told the state troopers that he is absolutely well and safe and has been staying in his house. >> cell phone service has been down a lot. it's hard for people to communicate. on the cell phones that are working, there are cameras. and we're getting more images of what the tornado looked like, don't we, matt? >> reporter: we are. and pretty astounding image you're seeing right here. backyard video. the toys turning into missiles. that trampoline going flying. this is taken from billy tile's house. five members of the family all cowering in

matt gutman spent the day looking for answers. and he's back in joplin again tonight. and, matt, i can see from where you are how much devastation still remains. >> reporter: that's right, george. this is the highest point in all of joplin, offering this panoramic west to east view, this destruction, a trail 13 miles, and most of what you see around me are people's homes. now, adding to their misery, we're discovering there's a housing crunch here in joplin, that even if people have money, there's nowhere to buy, nowhere to rent. what do you do when your house is eviscerated in seconds? where do you go? holly fleming had no choice. >> i had to get a roof over their heads. >> reporter: she packed all ten of her children and grandchildren off to her mother's house and scrambled to find a rental, competing with other bidders. >> i said, i'll pay you a year in advance. >> reporter: and there went her nest egg. the tornado flattened 30% of the city. destroying an estimated 8,000 buildings. leaving up to 20,000 people homeless. most are with friends and family. others in hot
