this is bloomberg. ♪ matt: i'm matt miller. quick check of what is going on in the markets. we see a real turnaround. the s&p 500 at the top of the hour was little changed. it's now down .3%. . today is columbus day. the bond market is closed. but stocks are trading, and they are now falling. we continue to see a rally in oil. this is the brent, we were showing of the nymex earlier, both gaining right now. you've got the vix index rising to almost 20 right now, at 19.49. joining us to discuss the moves we are seeing in oil and other commodities is alix steel. alix, it's been incredibly fascinating to watch. what is driving this? alix: in terms of oil, what is driving it most definitely is the weather, europe and the u.k.. in terms of the power supply, we know that natural gas -- that natural gas is having a hard time finding its way to europe. the wind didn't blow, so they didn't have alternative energy. what this does is make oil cheaper than natural gas. you are looking at potentially oil being at $190, $220 a barrel. it look

this is bloomberg. ♪ matt: this is bloomberg markets. i'm matt miller.he health 2021 conference rings together senior leaders to solve health's most pressing problems especially the drug pricing issue. joining us now is doug hirsch from the conference in boston. of the big catalysts for so many industries over the last couple years has been the pandemic and i'm wondering it doesn't necessarily affect drug pricing -- as covid changed the way your business works? >> a lot of people couldn't get to the doctor. i think it really turbocharged telehealth. they couldn't get to the pharmacy. and of course really trying to prove access. good rx has a service that really blew up over the course of the pandemic. matt: i could see him telling visits would lower cost substantially for everybody in the industry. in terms of the price of the actual pills, it doesn't seem like it would make a dent in it. mail-order makes more sense to me. what do you see on the cusp of changing prices for drugs? >> i don't think the pandemic impacted the cost of jet -- doves. -- drugs.

this is bloomberg. ♪ matt: this is bloomberg markets. i'm matt miller. want to get insight on the u.s. inflation numbers that came out today. they were higher than had been anticipated for september, climbing to 5.4% on a year-over-year basis. that matches the largest annual gain in cpi since 2008. joining us now, lindsey piegza. this was the fear, and, ok, it is higher than the estimates, that i think a lot of people were looking for to be in the upper end there. what is your take on the results? lindsey: it was a very disappointing number. stronger than expected, suggesting that this message of transitory is going to be increasingly more difficult for the fed to sell, and it compounds the pressure on the committee to move forward with removing some of the extraordinary measures we have seen in place. after friday's disappointing payroll number there was some concern that the trend may began -- may begin to backpedal on its willingness to initiate taper, at this point with inflation -- as you mentioned, the cpi near 5.5%, nearly double the fed's target

matt: yeah, we are back. don't want to say we are better than ever because we have a long wait to go before we get back the growth we saw in 2015 and beyond. what a debt to equity, the lowest we have been in 50 years. we have plenty of room for more debt. i don't want to see corporations do it but balance sheets are fixed. jonathan: what does that tell you about where we are in the cycle? matt: i think it still tells you you are kind of in the middle to late cycle. it is not late cycle where companies are doing dumb things. they are doing smart things because they have been scared, every three to five years with a major crisis. that keeps you in check as a treasurer. you are not willing to put yourself at risk because you saw what happened when liquidity went to zero and the housing crisis and in 2015 when the oil market had issues. corporations are saying i know debt is cheap but there is no reason to be silly and not take advantage. jonathan: what is the distinction between midcycle and late cycle? how you

matt hornbach, your reaction?att: investors will challenge the fed when they feel it is most appropriate to do it. i don't think that bond purchases are standing in the way of that. we can simply point to what happened in 2013, when the fed was still buying bonds. the market had no problem throwing a taper tantrum. i think it's less about the fed buying bonds and the market has to feel comfortable that it is doing the right thing. investors have gotten burned way too many times in short duration. it's more about the comfort level and the confidence level that growth is going to pick up and inflation will remain high. jonathan: colin martin? collin: i think it puts the fed in a difficult position and situation. it was a year ago that they change their policy to allow inflation to get a little high, and i do not think they were expecting five percent readings 12 months later on a sustained basis. i think they have boxed themselves in a little bit. i do agree with matt, the tapering will not have any impact there if

matt: it is on the margin. on the relative basis you moved up but on an absolute basis you have not. it is that people are hedging their bets and it is cheap insurance. for corporate and equity investors, if you are afraid the fed is going to make a misstep and that will drive equity markets and corporate credit lower, you should be short and be expecting them and hoping for them to go higher. it is a cheap hedge right now and i think a lot of times that is why it has been going up. jonathan: talking about the tone of the november 3 meeting, it will not be on the decision on tapering but the what to do next. can you give us some insight on what you think the meeting looks like in a couple of weeks? matt: to be a fly on that wall would be interesting. i think they are going to flat out say we are tapering in december. i think they will take 15 billion off a month. then the next question, once they get that checked out, there will be discussion around is this real? can we do anything to slow this inflation. if th

matt mainly's chief markets -- matt maley's chief market strategist and joins us now.ginal -- i religiously use what are kleinman moving averages. there is no time on a friday to go into the math. do you use the 50 and the 200 day moving average and you believe in the death or the birth cross? matt: i do watch those moving averages very closely. the death cross and the golden cross, those are a little bit different because they work for some assets and not so well for others so i tend to look back in the past. the 50 day moving average, there is no question that until september that was rocksolid support all year long and bounced off many times. then we finally broke through in september. the old saying is old support becomes new resistance and in the last couple of days we have been bumping up against that. we can finally break above that and give technicians some relief. tom: on a daily chart for our viewers and listeners as they look day today at bloomberg surveillance, how many days do you need to confirm a breakout? matt: you need time and percentage moves. if you
