here's cnn's matt egan. matt, good morning to you. >> good morning victor. there are growing signs that the u.s. economy is stumbling a bit at the start. >> of this year. >> we've seen. >> layoffs increase. consumer confidence has really crumbled. >> and investors on wall. >> street are growing worried about an economic slowdown. >> now. >> we've learned that consumer spending unexpectedly dropped in january by 0.2%. that is a significant pullback from the splurge in spending that we saw in december. if you adjust for inflation, spending was down a bit more. it's the biggest monthly drop for consumer spending since early 2021. and americans cut back on spending in a number of different areas, including cars, car parts, furniture, clothes, footwear and on food and beverage. now, i should note that this is just one month. and it's not unusual to see a bit of a hangover in january, especially as people open up their credit card bills from their holiday shopping. also, january was extremely cold, so that could be a factor as well. i do want to note there were so

matt peterson joins us. i love the contrarian idea, but this one seems really out there. the usa want to put money in china? >> well, think about how the presidential campaign went. we were talking about 60-100% tariffs on china. that hasn't really come to pass. now we're talking about maybe 10-20% if tariffs on china, and that's been enough to improve the outlook from if kind of really terrible the just maybe a little terrible. jack: and, of course, the stock market's been hammered for years, so it looks cheap. there have been a few signs of life in the chinese economy. >> that's right. it's still in a pretty rough place, but we've seen a lot of willingness from the government to try the turn things around. they're trying to do stimulus, they're cutting regulation and helping tech companies, and that's been enough to power chinese stocks to come back. >> and this is quite a comeback. the ishares china etf which is something we can all invest in, it's up 17% this year. i wouldn't recommend chasing it, that's a big gain that's looking extended, but i would be looking for e

matt biggs is the president of the union representing some of the 700 immigration judges.he recent firings left about 28 probationary judges without a job. when you fire immigration judges, you're effectively increasing the already huge backlog. the congressional research service says the backlog for immigration courts past 3.6 million cases by the end of 2024. republican congressman pete sessions says he supports some of the workforce cuts. as you know. that's a that's a roadblock to a lot of these deportations. very aware >> that they that they fall across the board on a lot of things. there's an opportunity for all these people once were abused and to come back. we've also reviewed department of justice memo that says immigration judges can be fired more easily. it says workforce protections for administrative judges are unconstitutional. when i tell you that people are stressed out. that's an understatement. the union president says the changes and the added workload affect judges. neither the white house nor the doj replied to our request for comment. >> in washington
