reporter matt bigler from kcbs radio is on the scene in san jose with the latest. >> reporter: this all happened at 7 a.m. here on lansing avenue. the scene is right behind us here. officers responded to a domestic disturbance. when they arrived on scene, they saw a fairly dramatic situation. there was a man chasing a woman out of the house. they went into the street and at some point he struck her with an axe. he was wielding either an axe or a maul, a large axe. she was struck in the head. the officers responded by opening fire on the man to stop the attack. he was shot. and both the man and the woman have been taken to the hospital. we have just learned that they are in stable condition, both the man and the woman, who is his mother. they are in stable condition. we have heard from lieutenant tom sims with san jose police. he says officers had seconds to react to the situation. >> i'll tell you there's a big difference between responding to an event where you know somebody is chasing after somebody with an axe and having it unfold in front of you. so the few seconds that it took them
