matt bradley remains in our london bureau. as we prepared across the top of another hour here where we've been on the air reporting on supreme court decisions, the freddie gray trial in baltimore, at 11:00 a.m. eastern time, we're dealing with this just now breaking story, report of 25 wounded by a gunman in a movie theater in viernheim, germany. anything further? >> as you mentioned this is a very rapidly emerging story and we don't have any solid information but what we have can add -- we can't confirm it, getting which from german media but we think -- the shooter has been detained by the police forces that the elite unit that was deployed to try to contain this situation. again, there are a lot of unknowns, we don't know how many were involved and whether the shooter was able to issue any demands or how long this incident took. we do know that he probably entered around 3:00 in this large movie complex. the german newspapers we have been reading have said that dozens of people were seen fleeing, that this gunman had a gun

. >> nbc matt bradley is live in london with more on this. matt, let's talk about the reaction to all of this, millions and millions of people. 1.3 million votes separating the two camps. >> it was a pretty narrow decision, alex. no under estimating the importance of this. it is being called independence day by those who supported it, and a complete disaster who hoped to remain. it is unpresident departmentsed decision. no country has ever left before. really there is just no going back for britain. already here, heads are rolling. i'm standing in front of the prime minister's residence here at 10 downing street and a couple of hours ago, david cameron appeared right here. he was choking back tears when he said he was going to be resigning in october. now, we know that he is at buckingham palace having an audience with the queen, breaking that harsh news. the sharks are already circling in these politics. the victorious camp are jockeying for position and they stand to inherit power. the markets here have already taken a tumble. the pound is a

joining us from our london bureau is nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley. what's the latest this morning? >> thanks, chris. good morning. most of the victims were turkish nationals but we're now hearing than an iranian and a ukrainian were among the dead. no one has claimed responsibility but speculation is already falling on the usual suspects, notably islamic state. that group has taken responsibility for past attacks against turkey. of course, syria, and iraq share a long border with turkey. and i just want to mention a few notable parallels with the attacks on the brussels airport in march. that was part of a larger assault on that city and was eventually claimed by islamic state. like in brussels, the three attackers yesterday arrived by taxi, they detonated suicide bombs inside the airport but it's worth noting at istanbul's ataturk international the first security check is at the entrance to the airport. but it's not clear whether that added layer of security reduced casualties. that preventing these attackers from really getting in to the main termi

let's get the latest from matt bradley. >> reporter: turkish authorities are now suspecting that the three attackers were uzbach and russian. jihadis tend to occupy that area. this was an islamic state attack but it's worth noting that we've gone nearly 48 hours without a claim of responsibility. and while that's not unprecedented, it is unusual. also, the people who were arrested both here and south of here, you the death toll rose to 44 and just a couple of hours ago, at ataturk int nax, there was a very moving and emotional ceremony for those dead. 10 of the now 44 killed were employees of this huge ait memorial service. the choice of target, this airport really struck against the heart of turkish global. bigs. this is not just a regional hub. this is the 11th largest airport in the world and it's a symbol of turkey's rising symbol against the world. matt bradley, nbc news, istanbul. >>> back close to home now, police in prince george's county say they have arrested the person responsible for three murders in district heights. they say the gunman lived in capitol heights, not far

exports. >> matt bradley, nbc london.r fellow at the new america foundation, treasury official with a couple of administrations. you have been a busy lady. what do you expect to see happen when the stock market opens in a few hours? >> definitely down in the morning, no question about that. it looks like the s&p is down significantly. it will probably start to come back a little during the day as things calm. the head of the central bank in england, their equivalent of janet yellen was focused on saying we have the tools necessary to back up this economy and make sure we have orderly markets. he was focused on liquidity, making sure that markets understand that players both in the u.k. and the global economy understand they are not going to let this be a contagion episode. that is important to know. he mentioned $250 billion of liquidity they are willing to put in the market if necessary. i think as he is clearly having conversations with janet yellen and leaders around the globe trying to maintain panic in the first coup

i'm joined by nbc's matt bradley in istanbul for us. matt, what more do we know about the suspects? >> reporter: kate, the most significant information that's come out today is the nationality of the suspects. one from kyrgyzstan, another from russia, and one from uzbekist uzbekistan. and this is significant, because these three nationalities are all hosting their own islamist insurgencies in those three countries and jihadis from those countries do tend to populate the upper ranks of islamic state, within their self-declared caliphate in iraq and syria. so this sort of internationalization of this attack is really just hardening turkish officials' resolve that this is, indeed, an islamic state attack. however, it's worth noting, and we're coming on about 48 hours since the attack, there still hasn't been a declaration of responsibility. and while that's not unprecedented, it is pretty rare. normally, islamic state would back up an attack like this with a claim of responsibility, either almost immediately or within the next day or two. so, as time goes on, it's welcoming less and le

that's where we find nbc's matt bradley with an update for us. tt, we know that turkish officials, they're splitting their time between taking action against isis elements and also unraveling what happened. how these attackers were able to pull off what they accomplished on tuesday. what are you hearing about officials -- or what are you hearing from the officials there? >> reporter: well, one of the more interesting things that have come out today, thomas, is the actual national identity of the three attackers who were involved. that's kirz bec . they aren't typically involved in some of the state attacks abroad against european targets, but they are interesting, because jihadis from those countries do tend to populate some of the upper ranks of islamic state. they're also known some of islamic state's fiercest fighters. and, of course, those countries do have histories with islamic insurgencies within them as well. as i mentioned earlier, the death tolls have been rising. these arrests that happened today, we don't know if they're actually conne

. >> matt bradley joins us now. what are voters saying there? stuff like the gentleman we just said? he obviously regrets it. >> well, there are some regrets but there's mostly just a feeling here in london that people are really -- just feel so distant from the rest of the country that voted to leave. london when you're walking around this city you feel as though you are apart or involved with continental europe. this is such a international city. i hate to indulge in the journalistic decision of my taxi driver. about an hour after the results were announced and i was racing to work and i have an uber driver that's a british national himself and a native of london. he had only been working about an hour and he already picked up a german man, a spanish man and a polish man and his point was where are the british people. this is my business. i'm making money from this nature of this city. if this referendum shows anything it's that london here is not great britain. if you look at the map, you can see that london is something of an island? among t

i want to bring in matt bradley who joins us live from outside the prime minister's residence in london, 10 downing street. matt, a lot of folks are quite surprised, some flat-out stunned. but polls show that this vote was going to be very close. every poll that we looked at over the past week or so. why then the shock? >> well, craig, it's not that clear cut. just a couple of days ago the poll numbers seemed to be shifting in favor of the remain camp. so while there was that leave element last week, just recently the polls were showing remain just a slight bit ahead. some of the booking agencies here, one of the major ones, they were putting the smart money, the betters money on the remain camp. >> what were the issues for british voters? >> reporter: well, craig, you could say that the issues were immigration, immigration and immigration. a lot of these voters were really appalled -- remember, this referendum was announced before the refugee crisis of last summer and before a lot of the terrorist attacks in europe over the past two years. so a lot of people were really frightened boy

let's get to matt bradley, good morning to you. what about all of these numbers on that online petition. is that a surprise? >> it's not. it's really -- it's appropriate. it's just the kind of saturday morning hangover that afflicts so many people here in britain. but it's also not that surprising at all. numbers are to be believed because the spread in the actual results from the referendum wasn't that wide. we're talking only a little less than 4%. so it's going to leave a lot of people very upset. and if any of the local news reports are to be believed there's a lot of buyers remorse among the leave camp because a lot of people vote with emotion, appealed to with patriotism and then watched the pound lose value, they saw their property drop in value. a lot of that was a realtime realization this was just maybe not the -- not what they thought it was going to be. but here's the thing. i can't really comment so much on the national mood right now because i'm here in cosmopolitan london and this is one of the few places in the uk t

nbc's matt bradley is live in london. good morning, matt. what else can you tell us about this? >> good morning, betty. the airport is just reopening this morning to some limited service. about a third of the flights have remained canceled. last night as you see on the video, at least three attackers open fire as they entered the airport terminal. and in some of this stunning video you can see that one of the police officers shot and downed one of the attackers before he then detonated himself. so no one has claimed responsibility for this attack but speculation is already centering on some of the usual suspects, notably islamic state and of course syria shares a large border with turkey. and the group has taken responsibility for several previous attacks against the turkish state. a few notable parallels worth mentioning here with the brussels airport attack in march. that attack part of a broader assault on the whole city of brussels, was claimed by islamic state. like in brussels, the three attackers yesterday arrived by taxi. they detonated suicide bombs inside the airport.
