matt delucia is live talking to police. what a nightmare this was for the family. >> reporter: absolutely, vai. we're talking to police, the good news is the mother and her kids are okay. they were not injured in this. this is the home where it happened. the 33-year-old mother was in her upstairs bedroom, she heard the break-in, went down and saw the three men. they ransacked the house. tied up the family bog dog and one of the robbers had a gun and threatened to shoot her while her kids were sleeping upstairs. >> i don't know why this house was targeted. the woman did have $800 cash in her possession that was taken. they poured out the contents of her purse but it appears they only took the cash. >> reporter: then they ran away. detectives will go over the evidence left at the scene. they have been talking with that mother to get whatever information they can. of course this is a quiet neighborhood, some of the neighbors i've been talking with tell me that this was quite something to wake up to seeing all of the activity.

matt delucia is live with a look at what's happening. walk us through what's going to happen. >> reporter: events are here at the convention center. more than 17,000 people, pilgrims from around the world are attending the world meeting of families and coming from more than 100 countries. the goal of this is to celebrate family, love and life. here is a look at some of the preparations yesterday at the convention center. the stage is set to welcome the world. today there is a news conference with the archbishop and the opening ceremony at 1:00 inside the grand hall that will feature performances, and set a world record for the most contributions to a mural painting where pilgrims grab a paint brush and at 4:30 a mass to begin the week, a week which will wend a much larger mass on the ben franklin parkway this sunday that will be led by pope francis. this is the first time the world meeting of families is being held in the u.s., and the expectation is that a record setting crowd will be here for the event we'll hear from some of the folks

matt delucia is live in the philadelphia neighborhood of tacony where a charter still will let out at noon. good morning, matt. >> good morning, vai. it's warm and muggy already. only going to get worse as we get throughout the day. several schools are closing early because of the heat. the problem is you have a lot of schools in the area that have older buildings and they don't have air conditioning. those rooms can get very hot. the safety issue is in play here. as bill said, the temperatures are expected to get into the 90s again. we could have a heat wave and the feels-like temperature could be hotter than that. hot weather comes just as many schools are opening up this week. that includes philadelphia schools which started yesterday. right now philadelphia schools are scheduled for a regular, normal day. we have been reaching out to them to see if that's going to change. as of right now it is still on schedule for a regular day. but let's get to the list of schools that are closing early. the list right here, trenton public schools and trenton catholic academy. closing early toda

matt delucia joins us live to break down the parking rules and the penalties for not moving your car. matt. >> reporter: tracy, we're getting close to the pope's arrival in philadelphia and starting today you'll start noticing the signs pulling up around the tow away zones which are around the ben franklin parkway, the art museum. this is one of those spots here off the ben franklin parkway, 22nd street. all of these cars will have to be gone. when? here's the map. the spots closest to the art museum and been franklin parkway, then spread out to other parts of center city next wednesday. we have this map on nbc10.com so you can check that out as well. what does this mean for you? if your car is parked in this area it has to be moved by the date you see there, or it will be towed. and the reason for that is the city says the vehicles have to be gone so the secure perimeter can be set up. the mayor talked about this last week but now you might be wondering what can you do if you have a car that has to be parked around here. you can buy a space in one of six parking authority garages, fo

matt delucia joins us live from center city. is there a specific threat that security officials are concerned about? >> reporter: the pope's going to be here, new york and washington, high profile areas and we have learned that there is at least one case that was disrupted. that information coming from the congressional homeland security commit chairman. he on the sunday morning talk shows said that homeland security has been monitoring threats against the pope, and disrupted one case in particular. >> we are monitoring very closely threats against the pope as he comes into the united states. we have disrupted one particular case. >> reporter: not much detail other than that. meantime, security source tells nbc news unwashington that authorities did detain a man making comments about wanting to do things to the pope. no evidence of a plot or plan was found. in this day and age with objects like drones, there is heightened concern. >> it's the kind of danger we have. if there is a dignitary who comes and somebody wants to do dama

matt delucia is live for us on scene there. matt, there were kids in the home, right? >> reporter: that's right. first off the mother and two children are okay, they were not hurt in this. you can imagine what was going on. after 1:00 this is the house there, the 33-year-old mother was in her upstairs bedroom. she heard the break-in, went downstairs and saw the three men. police tell us the three masked men broke into the basement door of the house when the mother gets downstairs she sees the three men, one of them put a gun to her head, the other two ransacked the house. tied up the family dog in the basement and stole at least $800 in cash. a 2-year-old and 10-year-old were upstairs in separate bedrooms sleeping at the time. they fortunately slept through the whole thing. the men got away. back out live on the scene, 2800 block of shipley street. police have since left the scene. but detectives will be going through all of the evidence that they found out here trying to get them anything that might lead them to the three masked men. we did speak with police not long

nbc 10's matt delucia is live this morning in camden where the community is asking what comes next? att? >> reporter: the pope's itinerary does not include a visit to camden but the folks who work here with the homeless, with the poor, the less fortunate are hoping this papal visit will bring a lot to this area, to this region. and really hoping that it wail make a situation that is really bad right now a whole lot better. a million or so people are expected to see the papal mass in just a few weeks. the big question over at the joseph charities are asking will his message encourage people to donate, to volunteer? the people here work with the homeless and the hungry and help rehab homes. >> a lot of people have heard the negative image of camden a lot these days. i think there are many of us that are working to change that. >> i hope it's going to bring a whole lot more attention so people come our way, we see what you're doing, we'd like to join this effort. >> reporter: of course, there are plenty of big and small city charities like that one that are throughout this area that are

matt delucia checked in with a group that helps adults complete their education. matt, tell us more. >> they are hoping to be a bit of inspiration to students who are in school right now. i'm not talking about toddlers or teenagers here. these are adults. graduate philadelphia is a group that has been working with people who left college for whatever the reason and now, years later, want to finish their degree. the group estimates there are 70,000 adults in philadelphia who left school and when you widen that out to the entire region, that number jumps to 300,000. a lot of people who could not graduate. one of them is lacountas ingram who left in part because she got cancer. now she beat cancer and wants to get back. >> i knew i would get back. i didn't know it was going to be 20 years later but i knew i would be get back. >> sometimes they say it's time and time to get back to school. >> they are 2,500 people they are helping right now. they want the young kids not to take college lightly and it's important to graduate and get a degree. the message to adults if yo

nbc 10's matt delucia is one of them. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, vai.t part out here, all eyes were on the jumbotron. it was near silence. occasionally there would be applause that would break out over something that pope francis would say. i'm going to just step out of the way here, you can see the throngs of people who are still out here, thousands and thousands of people came out here very early this morning, out here on the west lawn. they are starting to leave now. most stood aoude here waiting since 5:00 this morning. i've been talking with folks out here this morning. it's pretty much complete joy to have waited hours to see the holy father for a brief moment. 50,000 tickets were issued, the largest papal event in washington for this trip. one thing is clear having been in the capitol these past few days, these pilgrims are devoted, i can tell you that. we'll come back out here live. we have folks from our area, from the delaware valley who came down here, giovanni, you're from new jersey. you were at the mass yesterday, you came here today. you'

matt delucia is live along the parkway for us this morning. matt, you've been watching the crews in action. what can you tell us? >> reporter: was packed with people watching the papal mass. you can see some of the fences that are lined up here, all of the work that has to be done to take all of these down. look at some video we shot in the past couple of hours where you can see all of the water that is still left, all the water bottles donated by wawa out here. 2.5 million bottles and you see there are a lot left. also a lot of the cleanup that has been under way in the past several hours since the pope left town. you can see just the work crews working feverishly to get everything down so these roads can reopen. still closed to traffic, we see a lot of golf carts making their way through. let's come out live. you can see how it looked, all that water that was left over. it's almost above my head. bottles after bottles out here. one of the police officers told one of the workers just take a case. there is so much water. take a case and get out

matt delucia is live for us at the convention center. there are a lot of events all week and it starts today. >> reporter: it starts today, more than a million people expected for the papal mass on sunday but the whole reason that the pope is coming to philadelphia is because of the world meeting of families and that is what begins today here at the pennsylvania convention center. we've seen a couple of people start going inside to begin the setup. more than 17,000 pilgrims from more than 100 countries are attending that meeting this week. here is a look at some of the preparations. we were able to get video yesterday. today there will be a news conference with archbishop charles chaput. then a mass to begin the week, a week that will of course end with a much larger mass on the ben franklin parkway on sunday. the theme of the week is love is our mission, the family's fully alive. the focus is on philly. >> looking forward to participating on a joyous event with all of the people here. it's going to be very special. >> working in the cit

matt delucia joins us live from center city. matt, is there a specific threat that security officials are concerned about? >> reporter: vai, there is one case that was disrupted according to officials and of course this is on the mind of homeland security and secret service as we get closer to the papal visit. so the chair of the congressional committee for homeland security said on sunday morning talk show that they have been monitoring threats against the pope and disrupted one case in particular. >> feel secure about the poach coming into america? >> i'm concerned. i was briefed by the secret service in a classified setting. >> reporter: he didn't really reveal any other detail but a source tells nbc news in washington that authorities did detain a man making comments about wanting to do things to the pope. he was given a mental health evaluation but no evidence of a plot or plan was found. but in this day and age especially with objects like drones, there is of course heightened concern. >> it's the kind of danger we have. if

matt delucia is live along the parkway to show us the progress. >> reporter: a lot of work is going on here right now throughout the night. you may be able to hear some of it behind me, hear some of the fences coming down. that's happening throughout the night. a lot of work. i'm going to step out of the way. a couple of vehicles moving, a lot of them are just workers out here trying to get this taken care of. a lot of golf carts coming through as well. i want to show you before we go to the video, look at all of this water. wawa put this out here. 2.5 million bottles. look at this. stacks of water still out here. there was police officer earlier who told one of the workers take a case. seems as though this was an over estimate of how much water people would be using out here. but clearly, a lot of preparation went into this event. let's look at some video from sky force 10. you can see the cleanup under way. a lot of workers out here working throughout the night, cleaning up all of the trash out there on the streets and of course this is a big undertaking. not only for the preparation

matt delucia has been on the scene there all morning. what do you know so far? >> reporter: chris and tracy, talking with police giving us details about this but first, that is the house where this happened. 0en the 2800 block of shipley street. the mother and her two kids are okay. they were not hurt. imagine what went on here. police tell us three masked men broke into the basement door of this home. the 33-year-old mother was in her upstairs bedroom. she heard the break-in, went down and saw the men. they tied up the family dog in the basement and stole at least $800 in cash. a 2-year-old and 10-year-old were upstairs in separate bedrooms sleeping. they slept through the whole thing. >> at least one of them had a gun, put a gun to her head, forced her onto the kitchen floor, then put a towel over her head. the male said do not look at us or we will shoot you. >> reporter: detectives have been talking with that mother about this crime. we moved into the truck because i wanted to show you something on the computer looking up crime statistics for this area. this

live in pennsauken, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >>> 4:04.olice continue to investigate an unlicensed funeral home in philadelphia where investigators yesterday found decomposing bodies. acting on a tip, police inspected hawkins funeral home on 53rd street in west philadelphia. they say they found three bodes inside, two of them were decomposing. police told us those bodies should have been refrigerated. nbc 10's george spencer questioned the funeral home director. >> the bodies are to be cremated. >> why aren't they refrigerated? >> we don't refrigerate bodies that are being cremated. >> police say they should have been refrigerated. police are waiting on a warn to the remove the bodies from the property. >>> yesterday's discovery came almost a week after police found three decomposing bodies inside a garage in philadelphia. records show that the ruin fall homeowner was licensed but her funeral home was not. and she may face fines. >>> a montgomery county lawyer is accused of raping one of his clients. investigators say on august 6th, a woma

matt delucia is live for us in center city with a look at the work being done. >> reporter: if there is one sign that we're getting closer to this papal visit it would be the dozens and dozens of portable toilets we saw on the other side driving in. a lot of preparations are under way. they have the fence all around the oval that the moment and the transformation encompasses the streets, the sidewalks and everything in between. we can see designated parkway location signs turning the area into a giant grid. no stopping signs have gone up in the area. and protection really comes all the way down to the mail boxes which have been tagged for removal ahead of the visit. protection a major concern as we get closer. over the weekend the chair of the homeland security committee said there was one security concern. yesterday we spoke with congressman scott perry who said every precaution is being taken. >> you can never be 100% sure that is the bane of law enforcement. we have expectation of 100% and it only takes one of them to slip through. >> reporter: another new addition, banners welcom

this morning nbc 10's matt delucia is on the ground to show us what he's seeing. how are the crews doing, matt? >> reporter: well, the crews are fairly busy, rosemary. they have been for several hours since the pope left town, the crews started cleaning up the trash. right here on the ben franklin parkway in the middle of the road. you can tell it's closed, just work crews. you see the barricades up there. we're by 21st street. let's move around here and give you a better glimpse of what's going on. here along 21st street you see some of the trucks there picking up the generators, a lot were out here being used for this papal visit. here you see some of the port-a-potties still out here as well. a lot of the cleanup has been under way, taking down the fences, taking down those cattle chutes, we see some of the golf carts driving by this area. take a look at video we shot earlier where you can see some of the water bottles left over. thousands of water bottles are still left over after the 2.5 million left here by wawa for the crowds. not all were used. still a lot

matt delucia is live in fairmount where the parking restrictions are already in place. the tow trucks are out. >> reporter: they are. towing is under way. we're here at 22nd and the parkway, right in the heart of the pope zone if you will. you can see that the parkway here is shut down as it has been for a while now. here a week ago there were some cars that were parked on the side streets. not any more. you see the fences are lined up along the parkway, no cars coming through this way at this point. take a look, we have video from last night where we saw tow trucks moving in. relocating all of the vehicles, the first tow away zone went into effect last night at 6:00. the next tow away zone this morning at 9:00. they fan out from the parkway and keep going until wednesday. i spoke with several people who live here around center city. they have been picking up placards at the parking authority office in center city, effort to keep their cars from being towed. some folks say they aren't sticking around. >> all of those people. it's too crowded for me so i want to be able

matt delucia joins us live in center city. you are talking to people along the parkway there. so how are they dealing with this? >> reporter: the biggest thing you need to know this morning if you live in the center city area and you park your car around here, you have to move it because the tow away zones, they are taking effect. these no parking signs up for the better part of a week. 22nd street is starting to clear out. take a look. last night we saw tow trucks out here relocating cars, getting them out of the area. there are several tow away zones, the first closest to the art museum, that went into effect last night at 6:00. the next goes into effect this morning at 9:00 a.m. and what's happening is the tow away zones fan out from the parkway and keep going until wednesday. owners have to move their cars out of the area and park somewhere else or park in a city garage for $20. here is the thing though. we come out live you need have one of these yellow placards on the dashboard of your car, with this you can stay until thursday. then you have to move your car. i spoke wi
