we know matt gaetz had resigned. he had been the attorney general selection for the president elect. he pulled out of that effort and said he's not going to come back. so that would make it 219 to 215. for context, we keep talking about how razor thin the margin is, how narrow this majority is. the last time the majority was this small was 1917. that's how long it's been, more than 100 years. it is a very, very thin margin. so what's actually going to happen today where we're going to see how that margin actually plays out for speaker mike johnson? dana was just talking about call to order by the clerk of the house. we've seen that following the chaplain prayer, then the clerk would call for the electoral confirmations, then a quorum call to make sure that get a number of people that are actually there. what we're actually leading to now, and it will include nomination speeches for hakeem jeffries and for mike johnson, is to the roll call vote. now, anybody who watches the house closely and everybody should it's a wo

we would be remiss in talking about the 118th congress if we did not mention matt gaetz. he on the right, along with alexandria ocasio-cortez on the left, have pioneered a new model of becoming a member of congress and using that as a jumping off point to become a social media superstar. it was making an hour and a half long podcast every day, holding forth, and lo and behold, he toppled the speaker. he became the first member in the history of congress to do that. now he easily won reelection in his district but he quit, of course, because he was getting appointed attorney general. that did not work out for him. he made a lot of enemies in congress, to say the least. frankly, he is not going to be too started to be in congress anymore because he launched -- he has got his millions of followers now. he is the firebrand. what is example that says for other ambitious members because matt gaetz did not spend his eight years in congress trying to be a legislator. i do think that sets us up -- i sympathize with the young ambitious members. i think there are a lot of talented,

and republicans don't see her nearly as bad as matt gaetz. right. >> i mean, i think what we're seeing with pam bondi and what we will see with her hearing is a much more conventional sort of old school confirmation hearing where the democrats are going to be against her because they are substantively have differences with her on policy. feel like what she said about the 2020 election was, you know, wrong and irresponsible. but this this is sort of a substantive difference. they have in terms of her disclosures, in terms of her qualifications for the job. there doesn't seem to be as much question on the republican side. and that's why i think you're going to see a smoother road for her. yeah, i think with hegseth, part of the issue notwithstanding the allegations, is just that there's been a lot of pushback to getting just the basic information that committees usually get before these hearings, and that's going to be an issue. >> i do want to just quickly talk about rfk jr.. he's not facing a hearing this week, but he will very soon. he's bee

i think matt gaetz is in a case of his own.astily, without the full process of how these nominees are usually selected. but i think after gaetz withdrew from the i'll jump in and i'll let you i'll jump in and then i'll let you finish. >> factually, how different is that from other picks? because there's been a somewhat hasty or if we want to be diplomatic, untraditional process for more than just former nominee gaetz. >> yeah, i think that one was particularly hasty. it sort of played out over the course of an air force one ride to washington. and i think, you know, we have seen that there's been debates, you know, for the treasury secretary position, that one was one that trump really labored over. i think the one thing that has become clear, though, is in the weeks since these picks have been rolled out, trump is now viewing support for his nominees as a new version of a law loyalty test. so whereas in earlier iterations of this process, trump may have been more, you know, less immune to some of the outside pressures, it is n

uh, just thinking about president elect trump initially trying to get famous mccarthy rival matt gaetz into the attorney general's office and then seeing the speaker vote. do you think we're going to hear more from the ousted speaker this year? >> well, look, as far as i know, the ousted speaker is somebody who makes quite a lot of money now by his proximity to power and his ability to make phone calls and get them returned on capitol hill and from the white house. so i think we'll probably see a lot of that going on for those who want to chase that sort of thing down, which is important. but no, i look there was it was almost all personalities rather than policies that led to that long standing fight between matt gaetz and kevin johnson. i mean, you know, i just i just didn't i never saw that as some kind of a powerful faction fight. it was really more like people who just couldn't get along, didn't like each other and tried to undercut each other in some really unfortunate ways that ground congress to a halt. i think that that is behind us. i hope that that is behind us, because what

recall that trump's initial pick to lead the justice department, matt gaetz, the initial attorney generalonsideration from that role. that brings them to a 219, 215, uh, majority heading into the new congress. and, of course, that will grow slimmer still, as two other congressmen will head to high—profile roles in the trump administration. today's major task for speakerjohnson, there has been frustration brewing with his leadership for quite some time. thomas massie, one of the biggest fiscal hawks in congress, he threatened to oustjohnson last year over frustrations with the costly foreign aid bill. he never followed through on that threat. but after pre—christmas government funding, negotiations looked pretty sour forjohnson. he, of course, ended up coming to a solution that ended up funding the government through mid—march. but there are a lot of frustrations with the length of the initial bill and the costly provisions and a bipartisan deal with democrats. and, of course, the second attempt, at the urging of trump, johnson tried to muscle through a debt limit extension, which infuriat
