>> matt gutman thank you. >>> and now, to the north. ice breakers now being used on major rivers tonight. and look at the american side of niagara falls this evening. abc's gio benitez with the coast guard now moving in to help. >> reporter: tonight, the northeast is frozen over. north of philadelphia -- the coast guard has to use special ice breakers to keep 140 miles of the delaware river flowing. and just look at lake erie. the great lakes are usually 50% frozen this time of year, but today, the great lakes are over 80% frozen. some of that ice ending up right here at the niagara falls. mother nature createing extraordinary ice sculptures. what you're looking at right now is part of the niagara falls, totally frozen. we're told there's so much ice here it won't melt until may. people here say they haven't seen this much ice in decades. >> you get the ice buildup every year but the last two years have been extraordinary. >> reporter: meanwhile, in the boston area, quite the scare. an avalanche of sorts at the ice rink. >> i heard some

with that now abc's matt gutman with some things everybody should know. >> reporter: it's hard to imagine walking away from something as harrowing as this or this. and while some did lose their lives in this week's fatal metro north and transasia airways crashes, others proved surviving catastrophe is possible. but how? here at the coast guard's training center in north carolina they use a giant dunker to simulate plane crashes just like the transasia plane. the aircraft careening over flipping and smashing in to the water. it's like being inside of a giant washing machine. but before goi under, here's what you can do before any flight takes off. experts say choose an aisle seat within six rows of the emergency exit. statistics say this helps making it out safely. if the plane crashes and sinks, the coast guard says first grab a reference point like your chair and remove obstacles like armrests. only then should you unbuckle your seat belt and feel your way to a door or window. but watch when the jets turn on to simulate a storm. it's dark. i hold on to the seat. clear obstacles, unbuckle

abc's matt gutman in tennessee. >> reporter: the frozen vice gripping the country's midsection bedeviling drivers. this collision in pennsylvania between a school bus and minivan left both drivers and five students injured. from this big rig stuck in kentucky, to kansas, where cars car careened off the roads. icy roads, to empty runways, nearly 2,000 cancellations and counting. treacherous travel along much of i-40. we set out from memphis, a city serviced by only 14 salting trucks like these for 6,500 miles of roads. just a few miles outside of memphis and everywhere we go we're seeing cars spin out, right here we saw a spin out which resulted in a collision between this bus and that car. the 200 miles to nashville like driving on a ribbon of ice. just outside of jackson, tennessee, we tried to help terry and sarah johnson. >> i turned the wheel and when i turned the wheel, we hit another patch and we turned. >> reporter: you skidded once and you skidded again and then you spun around. >> and then we swung over here. >> reporter: we arrived in nashville a city encrusted with half an inch
