we are now getting a look at san jose mayor matt may hans budget proposal for next year.ocused on public safety and homelessness. mayor mehan says his proposal is what he calls a back to basics approach to the budget. that means spending money on what he views are essential city priorities, he says. that includes building more homes and businesses. well there are still many things we want to do. there are a few basic things that we must do. make our city safe. make it clean. make progress on ending unsheltered homelessness. make sure economy works, so we're creating more middle class jobs. to bolster public safety may or may hand says he wants to add 30 sworn officers to the police department and for the city's homeless crisis. his budget proposal calls for building 500 units of interim emergency housing. san jose is projected to have a $30 million surplus this upcoming fiscal year. the city of oakland is putting a hiring freeze in place in certain departments, including the mayor's office. this comes as oakland mayor xiang tao is trying to close projected budget deficit
