supervisor matt haney and hillary rhonen are proposing a charter amendment that would create a new department of streets and sanitation. the new department's sole job would be to clean san francisco's dirty and diseased streets. currently that job belongs to public works. but supervisor haney says years of mismanagement and corruption have left that agency ill equipped to fix the problem. the next step is getting the board of supervisors to put the plan on the ballot. voters would get the final say. supporters say a new agency with a single focus would make it easier to get things done. >> it requires a charter amendment. so we have to go to the people of san francisco in order to do this. there's no other way to do it. to create a department with a commission that is accountable. >> but critics say it would be too costly to launch a new agency and doesn't make sense to do it now when the coronavirus is ravaging the city's budget. supervisor haney says if voters approve it the plan wouldn't be implemented until the city has time to recover economically. >>> up next at 6:30, a defeat and a win

what can you report pics >> i just spoke with supervisor matt haney and this is happening in his district. he said that he has been texting with the san francisco fire chief getting updates of what's been going on at this fire. we went over a lot of the locations that happen. 13th in folsom. south venice and we just heard from the family that owns the business that burned here. he said that this is a family business where this broke out that has wood and storage pallets and that the building is now gone. according to supervisor haney, there are a couple of other businesses that may be impacted by this. at least three businesses affected by this fire. it started at 7 am this morning. it quickly went to five alarms which means that all available fire crews in the city were on this fire. this is primarily an industrial area but there is some evacuations of some homes on nearby 14th street. 14th and erie nearby where this fire is going on. the good news though is that you are looking at some of the video from early this morning after the fire broke out where you could see large flames and tha
