matt keller live for us at sacred heart in san jose. matt. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. how cool is this? check out all the backpacks. they have 3300 backpacks they're giving away today. that's 2300 more than they gave away in 2005. they only gave away 1,000 back then. the need has grown here in silicon valley. also the need for school supplies has really grown as well. >> we are collecting more supplies, so ten years ago for seventh to 12th graders, there were 11 items in the backpack. this year, there's 22 items for that grade level. >> this is what it's going to look like later today. kids have appointments. they'll come in and pick out their own backpack, get the school supplies like pens, pencils, paper, erasers, that kind of stuff. then they'll check out. they're also going to get gift cards for shoes at like target or payless. that will be another bonus for these students. all right. before we go here, i wanted to ask reggie and natasha some questions here. i picked out some backpacks for the crew in the studio.

abc7 news reporter matt keller has been gathering details on what happened. live in campbell now. hi, matt. >> reporter: jessica, since i last saw you, we moved to the back yard of a home on april way, and you can see the damage that was done by the flames overnight. their fence is destroyed, and right behind that, you can see the real damage. 16 vehicles were destroyed by fire overnight. this happened at about 3:00 this morning when firefighters were called. it was big. the flames were huge. and just over this carport, something that was very lucky for the people who live in the apartment over there. they actually have a pool right there, which makes a great fire break for firefighters. so that's the good news. that apartment complex was not threatened by the flames, but the homes on april way were. their fence was destroyed, but the good news, firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to other structures. 16 vehicles were destroyed. now, firefighters have a big job to do this morning. >> right now, they're going to go under all the hoods of the cars

matt keller live for us in campbell. matt. >> reporter: reggie, i was told the fallen crane was taken away around 2:00 this morning and they just removed another crane brought in to lift up the fallen crane. thies are both out of the neighborhood, which is good news for the people here trying to sleep. a lot of noise out here, they still have lights with generators running those. once those are gone, then maybe neighbors will be able to sleep sounder here in this campbell neighborhood. but of course, crews have to get these cranes out of the neighborhood before that can happen. it wasn't until after dark last night that crews were able to upright the crane that came crashing down here in campbell. the large piece of equipment fell on a home just before noon. the crane clipped two backyard sheds before crashing on the roof of a house on charmaine drive. >> it wasn't much of a crash. it was just a loud boom, and kind of a thump. i was mowing the lawn. i heard and felt it. so i mean, that's pretty drastic. >> a subcontractor
