reporter matt keller is live in livermore. orter: well, in the past 45 minutes, the alameda county coroner's office arrived on the scene, but they're not going to be able to do anything until this investigation is complete out here in this mobile home park. officers are still collecting evidence here on the scene. still a lot of questions to be answered about the shooting. in the past hour, a police spokesman told me multiple officers fired at the man. they haven't interviewed all the officer s so they're not releasing details on that. we know one man was killed and his home destroyed by fire. officers got their first call around 8:50 from the sun valley mobile estates. people were reporting a man acting bizarrely and challenging people to a fight. officers arrived on the scene and said the man had a rifle and refused to obey their commands and went back into his mobile home. officers say he fired several shots from inside the home, all while making suicidal statements. >> after about two hours into the incident, the officers n

matt keller live at san jose state university. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. the fall semester has begun at san jose state, but some students are finding out there is one class that is canceled and another that still needs a professor. that's all because of this lingering sexual harassment controversy. last year, university investigators found professor lewis aptakhar from the department of education sexually harassed a student. he stepped down as the department chair, however, he was still set to return to teach this fall. some students questioned the decision to allow him to return. now we confirmed overnight from a san jose state spokesperson, he will not be teaching at the university this semester. he was set to teach two chances. one was canceled, they're still looking for a professor to teach the other class. two third party investigations cleared his client of wrong doing. san jose state says no decision has been made on his future beyond this semester. matt keller, abc7 news. >> we're tr

abc7 news reporter matt keller live in menlo park with more on the local efforts to help this national disaster. matt. >> reporter: yes, reggie. so much help is needed in texas. that's what first responders from here in the bay area are doing. they're on their way to help. they're on the road to texas. as soon as they get there, they'll help in the rescues that are very much needed. yesterday, a lot of preparations to get on the road. they had to pack their boats. they had to pack all that equipment here in menlo park. the state's urban search and rescue task force three out of menlo park spent the afternoon packing for the trip to texas. 16-person team specializes in water rescue. obviously, that's very much needed. team members are coming from several bay area departments including the fire district, central san mateo county, palo alto, san jose, san mateo, and south san francisco. task forces bringing five vehicles and ten boats and trailers, enough equipment to last a couple weeks. >> so we're hoping for, you know, success. success is really measured by going out there and saving p

abc7 news reporter matt keller has been gathering details on what happened. live in campbell now. hi, matt. >> reporter: jessica, since i last saw you, we moved to the back yard of a home on april way, and you can see the damage that was done by the flames overnight. their fence is destroyed, and right behind that, you can see the real damage. 16 vehicles were destroyed by fire overnight. this happened at about 3:00 this morning when firefighters were called. it was big. the flames were huge. and just over this carport, something that was very lucky for the people who live in the apartment over there. they actually have a pool right there, which makes a great fire break for firefighters. so that's the good news. that apartment complex was not threatened by the flames, but the homes on april way were. their fence was destroyed, but the good news, firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to other structures. 16 vehicles were destroyed. now, firefighters have a big job to do this morning. >> right now, they're going to go under all the hoods of the cars

reporter matt keller live for us at taylor and 8th.ggie, in just the past ten minutes or so, they opened up one lane of taylor street. it appears they'll be opening up both lanes. it appears they're done and the on-scene investigation at least here is over. sad morning for oakland firefighters, finding out the news two of their own were shot here in san jose. one, a 30-year-old man, was killed. the other, a 26-year-old man, was taken to the hospital. and is stable. this is the crime scene here. it was active for 8 1/2 hours until they just wrapped it up after that shooting. this is also still happening now. this is video of police doing a yard to yard search in the area to the east and south of us. police detained one person. they want to make sure there are no other suspects still in this area. this happened after a family friendly event. they had music, food, and activities for kids. group of the off-duty firefighters were leaving the event when they were met by a group of men. something happened and shots were fired. >> for there to

matt keller is live at taylor and 10th with the search under way right now.t. >> reporter: natasha and reggie, we have moved since we last saw you. the crime scene is a few blocks that way. they have taken down the crime scene tape, and they have now moved their focus over here to 10th and taylor. you can see that an officer is here at the corner. there are several officers down the road here. they have one suspect detained but they're still doing a yard to yard search to make sure that there are no outstanding suspects around here that were involved in the shooting. this all happened at a family-friendly event here on taylor street. they had music, food, and activities for kids. a group of off-duty firefighters from oakland were leaving the event when they were met by a group of men. something happened, and shots were fired. >> a nice neighborhood. like i said, well attended, family oriented. i see family walking their dogs here. it seems to be a random act of violence. >> reporter: both firefighters were taken to the hospital. one died. the other is stable.

i'm matt keller in for reggie. >> i'm natasha. we have the whole team here. you heard from alexis and mike. jessica also joining us. we want to get to developing news in the berkeley hills because fire crews are keeping a close eye for flare-ups. this 20 acre fire causing major concern because of how close it was to where the oakland hills fire started 20 years ago. >> lonny rivera is live with what's happening now. >> reporter: yes, there's still a road closure here at lomas contavs and grizzly peak boulevard as crews are up the hill keeping an eye on hot spots. here's a look at the fire, which started near the lawrence berkeley national lab yesterday afternoon. the flames burned 20 acres, and the steep, grassy terrain made it challenges for firefighters. one firefighter fell 50 feet when he encountered a hornet's nest. he's in stable condition, but his fall is a reminder of how dangerous it is for firefighters. >> it's very steep terrain. it's rugged, so it's hazardous to the firefighters and exhausting for them. so they have to take things a little slower.

. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us at the police headquarters. matt?nd natasha, we just got an update from san jose police in the last half hour. they say that five people were shot in this drive by shooting. this happened last night just before 10:30. it happened near the reed hill view airport. the san jose police found four men andro aa w gunshot wound. they were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. a neighbor said several people have been coming to the area for the past week or so for what appears to be a vigil. a few candles were lit at the location this morning. something like this happening obviously makes people in the neighborhood concerned about their safety. of, because i hav little 8-year-old sister and when she heard the gunshots she got very carried and her first instinct was to hide behind the orr: and neighbors heard a car speed away after hearing the shots fire. obviously neighbors were very concerned about what happened in their neighborhood last night. five people were shot and taken to the hospital. four men, one

matt keller live for us in campbell. matt. >> reporter: reggie, i was told the fallen crane was taken away around 2:00 this morning and they just removed another crane brought in to lift up the fallen crane. thies are both out of the neighborhood, which is good news for the people here trying to sleep. a lot of noise out here, they still have lights with generators running those. once those are gone, then maybe neighbors will be able to sleep sounder here in this campbell neighborhood. but of course, crews have to get these cranes out of the neighborhood before that can happen. it wasn't until after dark last night that crews were able to upright the crane that came crashing down here in campbell. the large piece of equipment fell on a home just before noon. the crane clipped two backyard sheds before crashing on the roof of a house on charmaine drive. >> it wasn't much of a crash. it was just a loud boom, and kind of a thump. i was mowing the lawn. i heard and felt it. so i mean, that's pretty drastic. >> a subcontractor

matt keller, abc 7 news. >> the oakland fire department is honoring the firefighter who died this morning. abc 7 news reporter amy joins us live from oakland city hall with that part of the story. >> reporter: the fire command staff is in meetings working on statement to release to the public. out wardly the department is already showing signs of grief and of pulling together. the flag was lowered to half staff to honor the firefighter who was killed. several fire trucks escorted his body at 2:00 this morning on interstate 280 as it was taken to valley medical center. the firefighter was 30 years old. they have not released his name. we also saw a lot of activity at valley medical center. some firefighters were there to visit with the firefighter who survived the shooting. he's a 26-year-old man who is expected to survive. his name also has not been leased. we saw some san jose firefighters stop by. they brought in water bottles for those visiting the hospital to offer their support. these two shooting victims just graduated from the fire academy in april. they are new on the job. they we
