abc 7 news reporter matt keller is on the ground at that same scene in milpitas. matt, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. i just talked with the chp officer and she gave me an update on what is happening here and what is happening with the victims. let's show you the big mess that is right in front of us here on southbound 880 right at the 237 interchange and you can see there are five vehicles that were involved in this crash, the green van is the van that the wrong way driver was in and that person suffered the most devastating injuries, major injuries, and that person, a male, was taken to the hospital and is -- has major injuries. so very serious there. officers were initially saying this could be a possible fatality but they're saying right now that that person is at the hospital. there's only one other minor injury, a person taken to the hospital with minor injuries, complaints to the leg. here is a live look from sky 7, you can see how big this backup is and just how expansive this crash is here on 880. when i talked to the chp they to

and matt keller is live for us. >> reporter: good morning. i have good news for commuters heading through palo alto. first piece, it is not raining. so a little easier to control your car out here on the roads. second piece of good news is that highway 101 is now open here at edge bambarcadero road being closed all night. two lanes of northbound 101 north of the interchange began to loosen and unravel yesterday afternoon creating deep grooves and potholes. those two lanes were closed at 3:30 in the afternoon while paving crews worked to getting them fixed. eventually all of 101 was closed and diverted traffic. they estimated it reopening at 6:00 a.m., but good news for commuters, it is now open at 4:00 a.m. matt keller, abc 7 news. >>> and four people were taken to the hospital after two cars collided head-on during heavy rain in east contra costa county. this happened at the intersection of sand creek road and fairview avenue. you can see just how badly the cars are. several ambulances were called into help with the people who were hurt. des

abc 7 news reporter matt keller just got to that scene. what can you see, matt? >> reporter: natasha, check it out. there's a lot of people waiting outside of terminal "b" waiting to get back inside. they were going to check in to their airlines or were out if front. now they have to wait for that to happen because they've been kicked out of the terminal here. now the bomb squad i'm told has arrived. i talked to some passengers who said they saw them arrive on the scene. firefighters are also here in case they're needed because a suspicious package described as a backpack was found in terminal "b" around 10:15 this morning. the big airlines here are southwest and alaska. the passengers who were already screened by security were taken o'er to terminal "a" so they won't have to be screened again once this is over. people who have not gone through security are not being allowed into terminal "b." planes landing here and scheduled to unload at terminal "b" are being held on the taxiway or the gate. of course, this is going to cause problems and delays for all the pas

abc 7 news reporter matt keller live in san jose. matt? >>> good morning, reggie and natasha. with flu symptoms was taking her to the emergency room at good samaritan hospital and just 15 hours later she died. the family is still in shock. 40-year-old katie oxley thomas was in intensive care and put on life support within hours of arriving good samaritan hospital in san jose. her three children and other family members were by her side when she died hours later. it's believed she received the flu shot. the family remains in shock but wanted to share their story as a way to encourage others to take the flu seriously and get vaccinated. >> it's important to go out there and get the flu shot and take care of the symptoms. we just thought she'd be back home in a couple days, and she wasn't. >> reporter: katie thomas is one of 42 adults under the age of 65 who died from flu complications since october. 19 here in the bay area. katie was a marathon runner and did yoga as well as pilates. a healthy, active person who was expected to beat the flu virus. reporting live, matt keller, ab

matt keller is live on the scene for us., matt. >> reporter: this is a tough fire, natasha, because those flames are burning inside these giant piles of cardboard here at the manufacturing plant. firefighters are actually using thermal imaging, a camera, and also firefighters on ladders to guide these streams of water to the hot spots. check out the video of what firefighters encountered when they arrived on the scene after they got the call around 1:30 this morning. this is the california paper board corporation by manufactures cardboard on matthews street. all of the employees are okay. it is burning in the stacks of cardboard in the storage area on the outside of the building. overhead high voltage lines made it extra dangerous for the first firefighters on the scene. >> one of our biggest concerns was basically making sure those lines were shut down before we got too aggressive or put ourselves in a position to be underneath them because roughly four to five of the poles themselves were exposed to heavy fire when we show

matt keller live at sfo. matt? >> reporter: a plane was about to land on the wrong runway. a traffic controller noticed it before it was too late. >> aeromexico 668, go around. >> aeromexico 668, going around. >> reporter: the plane was about a mile out when the controller spotted trouble. the faa says aeromexico 668 lined up on the wrong runway. instead of 2a right was heading to the runway next to it, 2a left and on it was a flight filled with passengers. the faa says the pilots were using a guidance system used in poor weather to help with their approach. >> the runways at san francisco international are unique because they are very close together. that means visually you can get mixed up more easily than if the runway was a mile away from the other one laterally. >> reporter: this is the second close call at sfo in recent months. in july an air canada flight flew as low as 59 feet off the ground before the pilot aborted the landing. as for the aeromexico flight the pilots will be interviewed as part of this investigation. reporting live at sfo, matt keller, abc 7 news.

abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live for us in san jose. matt?reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. this was shocking, a mother of three had just turned 40. she was healthy. in fact, she was a marathon runner. and then she got the flu and came here to good samaritan hospital where she died within hours. the family is still shocked. katie oxley thomas was taken to the emergency room suffering from flu symptoms. conditions declined so quickly she moved into intensive care and was put on life support. 15 hours after arriving from the hospital the mother of three passed away. the family believes katie had a flu shot. >> very active, very healthy. i mean, exercised regularly. she's a marathon runner. you know, really valued health. that was a part of what was so shocking about seeing her decline so quickly. >> reporter: while the elderly are susceptible to the flu california has seen 42 deaths of people under 65. 19 of those here in the bay area. the family has ordered a private autopsy and expect those results within three to four months. repor

matt keller has the story. >> reporter: water bubbled up and flooded san jose's campus on sunday. water poured out of a broken main near east san salvador street starting in the late afternoon into the evening. students wondered if classes would be canceled on monday. >> were you wanting to be out of class? >> yes, i did. i kept on checking my phone. it's pretty bad, though. >> reporter: class was not canceled, but evidence of the flooding was left behind. the water surged through campus, going past the event center, student wellness center and all the way to the student union building. >> our custodial crews were here overnight, cleaning the structures, drying them out. we're working on the last building now. >> reporter: the influx of water colliding with the underground heating system creating steam. san jose state doesn't expect any long-term damage, but they're still assessing the situation. first-year student savannah andrews took this video. the ground just a little damp. no rain boots needed to get to class. but at least it's dry walking to class. >> yeah, if it had been b

. >> reporter matt keller tracking this new development from our newsroom. good morning, matt. >> reporter: we're expected to learn more about the man's identity at a news conference later today. he was taken into custody last night, two days after the attack happened. here's surveillance video of the suspect walking around harper middle school tuesday morning. police say the suspect snuck onto the campus and sexually assaulted and robbed a school employee inside a classroom around 6:30 a.m. about an hour before kids showed up for class. our media partner "the mercury news" reports the victim is a teacher and had arrived early to prepare her classroom for the first day of school after the winter break. she called 911. when police arrived, the unanimous was gone. officers tracked him down last night. the head of harper academy middle school issued a statement about the man's arrest saying this was a senseless, heartbreaking crime, and our entire community is grieving. we are relieved this criminal has been arrested and hopeful justice will be served. police ch
