so mayor matt mahan says that this is an historic investment in the unhoused population. but this is a shift in the money that voters wanted toward affordable housing. let's take a look at those numbers so that you know what we're talking about, that the city is now allotting $22 million toward affordable housing, which is less than half of the money that was allotted in last year's budget, choosing instead to spend $27 million on interim housing and clearing waterways instead, this would create space for 1200 more people to leave encampments. now that is on top of the capacity the city already has in terms of shelter space. but what the mayor calls an historic effort comes with that cost, and that is that shift of measure e funds. voters passed measure e four years ago specifically to create more affordable housing. now, some housing advocates say losing focus on affordable housing is risky, but the mayor says it's what the city needs to do right now. we cannot have complete, unmanaged, unsheltered encampments all over the city. this is not sustainable. continued dollars
