matt: we have just broken these headlines. martinsident of the european parliament, has won't run for another term as president of the ep, but in said he will return to german politics and obviously the speculation is that he will try to give angela merkel a run for her money as chancellor. she has announced she will run for a fourth term, but we should point out, there are other people who want to throw their hat into the ring as chancellor. there is sigmar gabriel, olaf scholz, and other people it could be. your point was a very good one. these people have been there for a long time. sigmar gabriel could have contested angela merkel in the past and failed to do so. they need fresh blood in the opposition. scholz must have gone to sigmar gabriel and said, if we are going to do this and i am going to quit, then i need you to commit to me, being the person who is going to take us forward and towards that big fight with angela merkel. i find it stunning he would make this move without that kind of guarantee coming through from gabriel.
