nixon did not do that, kennedy -- they must have all had spin teams but were they more, were they less guarded with the press than they are now? >> much more so. much more so. you know, you see it, in that moment, just after that stakeout, they go to new hampshire and there is a famous news conference where the reporter from "the washington post" says in front of a crowded room of press, senator, have you ever committed a did -- adultery. no candidate was ever asked that blanket question. >> jon: do you think it is because it is easier, more salacious, it sells more papers than trying to find out the moral fabric of an individual with real virtues that matter in governance? >> well, i think certainly after richard nixon there was a legitimate and genuine feeling that personal morality mattered more. that character had actually done him in and done the country in more than policies. and so there was a reasonable impulse there. but i think mostly we have veered and began to veer in that moment into the realm of entertainment. into the idea that campaigns and politics had to unfold like story arcs, had to have characters, had to have plot twists. we had suddenly these satellite dishes and you could go live from anywhere at any point. and you had to have something to go live with. that same year the jim baker and tame's fay baker stand dahl, would you have had a great time with, the mass car ar streaked face. >> some of makeup. >> and fawn hall and olver north. >> they went on a jag. >> they went on a crazy. >> jon: you're right. >> you can see that-- . >> jon: i didn't remember hart went back into the race. >> yes. >> jon: he went back in. >> yeah, yeah, that is a decision i think he really regretted. he sort of walked away and said this is nobody's business. this is no way to run a campaign and i will not put people through this he came back in t went very poorly. he registered 0 percent in iowa which is not ideal. >> well, i think you would make a good prosecutor, erik. >> i tell him that every day. >> ha ha. i think everyone's wondering, you know, a boardroom is like a marriage. you never really know what's going on inside. and the real issue is the darden board had to know that the shareholder backlash from selling red lobster would be quite heavy. so you wonder why they took this step and what were they thinking and what were the advisors telling them for their millions of dollars of fees? it's all baffling and frankly we shouldn't have been here. we all should be eating bread stibblings. >> where should we be? >> well, they should have spoken to their shareholders. they sold red lobster at a time when the shareholders had called a vote on the issue and over 50% of shareholders wanted to vote on whether or not to sell red lobster and to go ahead and weeks before the meeting sell that company was just a slap in the face for shareholders. i mean, what was the board thinking? does it not protect them t board from a lawsuit? which shorlsde would probably want to do right now. >> well the board can sell, so yes maybe the law hasn't caught up to the situation but it doesn't look like the law seems to want to change either delaware or generally, this is something that's going to happen behind the scenes with shareholder activists and institutional investors making sure they have the right directors. so it's to be continued. >> well, the new board will control who the c.e.o. will be. have you heard anything about who we might expect? >> well, it won't be me. >> or ron johnson. >> ha. there's a whole slew of people at the country club that i'm sure would be happy to take over. but no, and that was one of the other puzzling things about this situation. he old c.e.o. resigned after the red lobster sale and they really had nothing else to look at for continuity and that only empowered star board to come in. so one assumes they should be able to get a good c.e.o. olive garden is a good asset. their other restaurant groups are growing. this is not a radio shack. the restaurant will be around for a while, for those of you who love it. >> i would like to go to a radio shack and then go eat dinner at olive garden, personally. >> i'll buy. >> ha ha. before you run, even if shareholders are onboard with what darden is going to do, let's say they feel aggrieved. do they have any options? matt baretto. matt, you've been saying for a while that actually mainstream polsters are doing a bad job of capturing latino opinion and particularly capturing latino opinion in colorado in this very contested race. >> that's right, chris. thanks for having me on tonight. we've been documenting this for a number of years. it goes all the way back to the 2010 senate race with michael bennet that you mentioned earlier. in that race most of the polls indicated that bennet would lose. and if you looked at the internals in those polls they had very small samples only administered in english of latinos that were not representative. bennet ended up winning thanks in part to the large latino vote he received. colorado pollsters have had a problem getting the latino vote right. >> one of the things that's fascinating in the dynamic here, you basically had 2012 gop got crushed among latinos. people say we have to turn this around. we're seeing that not happen in this election at all. in fact, the candidates are running to the right. do you think that is going to hurt them two years from now or is no one going to remember what folks were saying about isis bringing ebola over the southern border two years from now? >> yeah, no, i think scott brown in particular is damaging the entire republican party with those comments. these are all on tape. they're in video, they're in their own campaign ads. they can't run away from this. the polling we've done has suggested latinos are very upset with the rhetoric and the policy stances that many republican candidates are promoting today. it will hurt them in 2016. >> this data from pew -- let's put it up and folks can look at it as i describe what it is. because it's key here. democrats still have a wide advantage among who latinos thing is supporting them, right? but it has shrunk between 2010 and 2014 and it has even shrunk from 2012, which suggests that the republican tactic to block immigration reform and hope that the blame getting equally distributed has been effective. latino enthusiasm for candidates has declined which is the strategic tactic or play that republicans have chosen. >> yeah, you know, you're right. one of the issues was republicans were so low, i think they figured we can't get any worse. we've seen the same thing in our polling. president obama is down 12 points in his handling of immigration from hispanics. democrats in congress are down 12 points. republicans are low. they've always been low. but the blame is getting shared and that's something that the democrats need to work on. they need to do more outreach. they need to reassure latinos that they're on our side and they need to fight for the latino vote in this election. >> matt baretto, thanks very much. >> my pleasure. >>> super pacs are so 2012. i'll tell you why ahead. plus a hurricane sandy survivor governor chris christie told to sit down and shut up will be my guest. i'll let him talk coming up. i can't stop playing. that's not how it works. i mean it's so simple. it's like my car insurance. i saved 15% in fifteen minutes. well esurance could have saved you money in half that time. three in a row! sweet! 15 minutes for a quote isn't so sweet. level 2! start with a quote from esurance and you could save money on car insurance in half the time. welcome to the modern world. esurance, backed by allstate. click or call. matt also joins the panel. matt, for the first time since 2004 the national security hawk issue is back playing in the campaign. is that how you see it? >> absolutely. you saw it with scott brown in new hampshire who was the first republican to start running ads about president obama's policies in syria and closed the gap with the democratic incumbent. i think this growing anxiety and pictures of isis rolling through iraq, just bad news adds to the anxiety and problems for the democrats this cycle. >> kim, let me ask you about ebola, too. is that playing into this now that we have another ebola case this time in new york city? how is that playing into the security debate? >> what you see happening out there in race after race is a growing number of senators who came out initially and said they agreed with the president for instance on his policy of not instituting a travel ban. now as they see the fallout that administration is getting among the public that does not seem to believe that the white house is handling this very well, they are all running to distance themselves. you have had senate candidate after senate candidate reversing itself calling on the administrn saying they should institute a ban. that is also playing in the race quite strongly. >> democrats say this is all just republicans trying to raise the anxiety level and it's not fair and relevant. >> yeah. let's see if we can understand something. the republicans aren't making this stuff up are they? they didn't create islamic state as an issue. they didn't create ebola. they didn't create ukraine. okay. it's all very real. the reason i think they're having a problem has a lot to do with president obama's way of handling these crises. he doesn't react to them until they have built into a crisis. didn't do anything in ukraine. islamic state, he reacted after t they were up on the mountain and two beheadings. ebola, they were running from behind as well. you get a crisis in people's faces all the time and it looks as though administration is always behind the ball. that is what is creating the anxiety. the president's reluctance to address the issues before they build into a crisis. >> mattour democratic argument is you can't cold hagen responsible. they don't have anything to do with iraq policy. they're saying we're just as tough on isis as the republicans. what's your response to that? >> i think the reason why this is working and it really is working is that it plays to legitimate anxieties obviously. buff it plays to a growing distrust of how a democratic led government has performed over the last six years under president obama. a president these candidates have supported. a trust in government is again at all-time holows. you had the ebola and the scandal at the veteran's administration and irs. it's one thing after another. you have seen these stories become localized these national stories. for example, the story about this dr. eric spencer in new york came down with ebola. he happens to be from detroit where i am right now. it was the lead story here about how a guy from here has come down with this disease. >> kim, you know, about a decade ago when president b
