joining me tonight, matt pierce for the los angeles times and contributing writer for the new yorker.ntlemen obviously on the ground. matt, what have you witnessed that you would consider to be overboard treatment of journalists on the ground? >> well, ultimately it's not my place to say what is overboard. that's the public's decision. it is hard to see the action when we're placed in pens from a distance from where police are shooting tear gas at demonstrators and many of whom are peaceful, some of whom are not. it's hard to see that and i i know that police are saying they want to do it for our protection and their protection but we're supposed to be out there as an independent eye for public. we can't do our job if we can't see what's happening. >> do you think the media is being picked on? >> i don't know if i can say the media is being picked out been they are treating the media indiscriminately and there appears to be a degree of an tag nix towards the media. i'm not comfortable with the idea that people are being prevented for entering for their own safety because news reporter

i want to bring in matt pierce, a reporter with the los angeles times. tt, you spoke with the ferguson police chief right after ryan's arrest. what did he tell you? >> that's right. i was actually not near where ryan was at. i stepped into my car to charge my phone and i was looking at twitter and i saw that they had been arrested. so i couldn't quite believe that because i had just seen them earlier in the day conducting interviews so i called the ferguson police chief tom jackson and i told him what i had heard. he just told me, oh, god. and so he said he was going to make some phone calls. so i talked to him again about ten minutes later and he said that he called over to the st. louis county police who were running last night's crowd control and he said, i've told them to release them and said that they had probably been arrested by somebody who didn't know better. >> and you've been traveling to there, speaking with senator claire mccaskill, you are starting to see the elected officials weigh in. the senator says that she's working on demilitarizing

the way you were released is that fellow reporter matt pierce there with the l.a.age of things an the ground, called up the chief of police and said, do you realize that your police just arrested two reporters and then a little bit later you were released and there was no paperwork, no charges, no nothing. is that correct? >> right. we were given an arrest report number but we're told we're not going to be able to get the report for several weeks. yeah, we were just released and told not allowed to speak to a -- no names at all of anyone who we dealt with. we're not allowed except at the end where we got a business card. but, you know, essentially they were just -- they just released us and that was it. we didn't get to talk to anyone. now we're still camped out here. and when they arrested us, we were both near our vehicles. our vehicles are both in mcdonald's. now we're over a mile away, i think, probably a little more. no way to really get back to our cars. we're here at the police station and, you know, a colleague of mine is on the other side sort of town and

joining me on the phone from ferguson is matt pierce, a national reporter for "the l.a. times." he's been in ferguson the past three nights and was instrumental in getting ryan reilly and wesley lowery released from custody. matt, i understand you were not necessarily in the vicinity where the tear gas was, but you in fact called the police chief after wes lowery and ryan reilly, informed the police chief they were journalists to which he responded "oh god." >> that's right. this all started, there was a peaceful march in the afternoon that had gone down where a lot of the most -- the worst protests had been happening over the last few nights. so i had gone back to my car to charge my phone and, you know, just looking at twitter i saw that, you know, wes and ryan had just been arrested. i had just seen them a little while earlier. i knew if they were getting arrested, there was something probably wrong because they're both professional, respected reporters. so i called ferguson police chief tom jackson, i told him that. he was just -- his reaction was stunned. so he told me thank

matt. >>> stray bullets fly across a delaware county neighborhood piercing a window and coming within inches of a three-year-old child. the search is now on for two gunmen.
