cnn's matt rivers joins me now from mexico city. matt, what are you learning about this?is part of a broader plan? >> reporter: yeah, jim and poppy, i mean, in terms of this vaccine here in mexico, this is good news for a region that could use some. this agreement between mexico, argentina and astrazeneca to start producing eventually somewhere between 150 and 250 million doses. the timeline of this, astrazeneca says it wants to finish phase three trials by november of this year, assuming that those trials go well, that they produce a safe and effective vaccine and then production starts in the first three months of 2021. how fast that these two countries can produce hundreds of millions of vaccines, how fast they can get it into the public, that remains to be seen. it is a sobering reminder best case scenario will be mid-2021 before vaccination campaign has an effect across latin america. still, when you look at the average number of deaths here in mexico, vaccine is clearly, clearly needed. this is good news. down in brazil, in the state of parna, officials said they wi

matt rivers has more on brazil's double milestone. >> reporter: we know the outbreak in brazil is one of the worst in the world and the data that we get just continues to back that up. horrible new milestone has been reached in brazil, with the country's death toll now surpassing 100,000 for the first time. the overall number of cases in that country is also now topping 3 million for the first time. this after some new information on saturday from the country's health ministry recorded nearly 50,000 newly confirmed cases and just over 900 newly confirmed deaths. meanwhile, we did hear from president jair bolsonaro, who from the get-go has basically been flippant about the fact that tens of thousands of brazilians have lost their lives. it was reacting to the news of 100,000 deaths that the president said, "we are going to get on with life and look for a way to get away from this problem." now, nearly 25% of all deaths recorded have come from the brazilian state of sao paolo, which just on saturday surpassed the 25,000-death threshold. but despite that the state continues to advance it
