thompson has been covering this story. anne, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. german authorities find themselves playing offense and defense this morning, aggressively pursuing the suspect while explaining how he eluded their grasp after they identified him as a potential threat earlier this year. he is the most wanted man in europe. 24 years old, now the focus of a manhunt for the murderous attack on a christmas market in berlin. german police executing raids in berlin and across the country looking for him. his papers found in the cab of the semi truck that barreled through this holiday spot at 40 miles per hour killing 12 people. amri is a tunisian national and reportedly of italy as well. described as armed and dangerous, amri is rel knowell o german authorities. after arriving he was put under surveillance for six months suspected of plotting an attack. this past august he was arrested on suspicion of having fake documents but was later released. he applied for sigh lem, but was rejected. his deportation set for july did not happen because he did not have

thompson is in berlin this morning. good morning, ann. >> reporter: good morning, matt. it is a gray day here in berlin to match the city's mood. it's centuries old, marched by an act the truck that was a mass murder weapon, driven in a rampage into a berlin christmas market. a suspect, seen here with his head covered, was arrested and is being questioned by police. ploel media identified him overnight as naved b, arriving nearly a year ago and already known to police for minor offenses. those reports could not be immediately confirmed by nbc news. a passenger in the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, believed to be the original driver of the truck. police said the driver crashed into the crowd intentionally, calling it a suspected terror attack. the truck pulled into the market at speeds without warning, and with deadly force. killing 12 people and injuring up to almost 50 more, barrelling through the market at 40 miles per hour. amateur video at the scene showing chaos, onlookers horrified. >> it went just past me,as girlfriend. i think it missed me by three meter
