leigh spann is tracking matthew this morning. what's the latest, leigh? >> well, good morning, guys. we are waiting on the 5:00 update. it should happen anywhere between now and 4:50. we will get the information from the hurricane center. it is a strong tropical storm. 65 sustained winds and just the caribbean and moving quickly to the west at 16 miles per hour. and as it moves through warm waters of the caribbean, it should become hurricane matthew. and notice we will be tracking this through saturday night, still well in the caribbean, way away in florida. and then it will make a hard turn to the north, passing by jamaica and heading toward the eastern portion of cuba monday evening. most of the models take this, continue to take this due north eastern portions of florida. let me explain why. this is one computer model. this is the european model but it shows what happens. there will be small differences but they all pretty much agree on moving due west, warm waters in the caribbean so becomes a stronger storm. and begins to make the turn to the north.

and hurricane matthew is getting stronger as we head toward the weekend. storm team 8 meteorologist julie phillips is tracking the storm. hi julie. hurricane, matthew is sitting at category three status due to max winds at 120 miles per hour. still moving off toward the west in the southern caribbean at 12 miles per hour. so it says slow down a bit. but you can see the eye formed in the center of the storm there as it moves south in the southern portions of the caribbean sea. here's the track. it's looking similar to what we've been looking at the last couple days. it's going to continue moving into sunday, it turns toward the north. it will head through jamaica as a very strong hurricane. and then continue to make its way north as we head into early next week. now depending on if it's more toward the western or eastern side of this cone will determine if the east coast of florida does see impacts from this storm, depending on the exact path. but at this point, this looks to be the track of it. and we've been looking at this general track over the last cou

and then we turn our attention to matthew. and now it's going to continue warm waters of the ware -- of the caribbean. it gets close to east florida. the only reason it's expected to stay away from us is the dip in the jet stream. hopefully it comes together but still yet to be determined for sure. in the meantime, left the forecast and eight days in the upper 80s with scattered downpours. how about traffic on the 8s? >>> well, we've got an accident in the bradenton area, 301 entrance ramp to northbound 75, folks. and basically, we've got little bit of lane blockage here on on the entrance ramp but you can still get by. and the radar, we have been talking about the rain in the area. and we tend to see accidents where rain pops through. let's take a look at the sunshine skyway bridge. raindrops here, so use caution over it. and let's move over to the main big problem here, southbound 75. it's completely closed off here. just past fowler avenue. here's a live look. you can see for yourself, it's there's a tow truck onscene here.

this is hurricane matthew churning in the c caribbean. i don't think there is a doubt that it will turn westward, and then this turn to the north is really going to be the key. how soon does it happen? stronger and push the track a little bit more to the west? or for that w matter wo could ie weaker and move the track to the east? i still feel pretty good that the hurricane will bypass us but you see the cone extending over will stay primarily east of our state putting us on the better side of the storm. the gps model had been also showing the right hand turn, a major hurricane approaching jamaica, and problems in the bahamas and then it could impact the carolyn in as and then moving northeast. the european model is move between cuba and haiti, and then maybe over the turks and caicos and then accelerate north and northeast. so we'll be fine-tuning it. one side note, if the european verifies and we have a big storm off of the carolyn in a coast next weekend, that will drag down the first touch of autumn. sometimes hurricanes that bypass d

but i'm going to update you on hurricane matthew. strengthened overnight to 100 miles per hour winds making it a category two hurricane. by the weekend, it may be a powerful category three storm, 120 miles per hour winds south of jamaica. as it turns to the north, it's expected to stay off florida's east coast but you can see the threat cone gets wide as you head out five days so we will keep a cl it's so close to florida. winds off the gulf of mexico. i've kept in a couple showers. not widespread but get under one of them and it will ruin the commute. showers in citrus and hernando and one off the pasco outline. and one tiny area around the sunshine sunshine skyway bridge. so don't be surprised if you live near 75 to be getting a stray shower. and inland area, you will see the rain later today. and now watch what happens, an onshore flow, by 9:00, rain of rain gets better right through the evening so for the high school football game, especially for the beginning of testify game, might have downpours. and here's a look at matthew as

this is matthew, tropical storm matthew. it is pretty much a shoe-in that this becomes a hurricane. the big question is where is it going to go. we know it is going to go west, but at some point in time it is going to feel the weakness in the ridge up north and start to if it's a little sooner, it may be closer to the dominican. if it is a little later, it could be more towards central cuba. now, there are so many things that are going to have to happen after sunday before we really know where this is headed. you have to stay find. we will be updating tomorrow morning. we get advisories and new tracks every six hours. so clearly at least for the time being it is going to move north. but there is a chance it could be pushed back to the west if that ridge rebuilds. that would be toward the middle to latter half of stay tuned. for the boaters, tomorrow look for winds out of the southwest at 5 to 10 knots, water temperature 85 degrees, seas a couple of feet. there are your tides, your sunrise, and sunset. hour by hour, showers and storms likely in the morning. there's a look at florida'

and he is tracking matthew and we have the latest. everything on track and today as it moves across from the spot in the caribbean that does not show much intensification and hurricanes and moving into a favorite spot where this can get cranked up. the models have this as a cat 3 or it is heading certainly in that direction. big blob of convection it is away from land. it is not being impacted. there will be land intersections. they are insisting on a track that's east of the estate, it is close but it is east and you know we would be on the west side of the storm parallelling our state on the east side. side. and that brings with it more rain and wind typically. we'll see if this plays out. what is happening and g-4 plane is flying around. and around matthew. all that data goes into the super computers. that's happening now. it is moving west. taking a turn. this gets close to us. it could be impacts jamaica, wyn ward passage and impacts to the caribbean. the margin of error on day 5 as far as the track position is about 240 miles. l

let's go to julie phillips. >> we're watching tropical storm matthew. max winds at 60 miles per hour. currently moving off toward the west at 20-miles-per-hour. so while the system was just named it's already a very healthy tropical storm as it makes its way west into the caribbean. notice as we go toward the end of this week into this coming weekend it will likely become a hurricane then with an upper notice the shift toward the north. we're expecting a hard turn to the north as we head into this weekend and early next week. then we're expecting additional lengthening. due to the proximity of the hurricane we're watching this of course. most of the system are east of florida but we're still going to watch this very closely. this is a while out. you know how quickly these we're watching this closely for you. max winds at 60 miles per hour. here's a look at what we're expecting on that european model. you can see it'll be moving into some very warm waters. it will start to approach some lighter wind sheer which will help it to strengthen and make its tre

let's begin with a check on hurricane matthew. meteorologist steve jerve joins us now with the latest forecast track. >> this was upgraded at 2:00 as of 5:00, not much of a change in strength. it is much stronger than 24 hours ago. let's look at the satellite and where it is located. eastern and central portions of the caribbean before too long. cool cloud tops. bright red color indicates a healthy growing storm. thunderstorms around the center. 75 miles an hour winds, moving pretty quick west at 17 miles an hour. but, note that sharp northerly turn that the computer models have forecast. the final position, about 450 on tuesday afternoon. and you can see why the hurricane center has decided on this track. the consensus of the computer models have shifted a little further west, back toward florida again today. as we always tell you, the forecast tracks change as well as the spaghetti models. we will continue to update you and watch the storm over the next several days. back to you. >> all right, thanks steve jerve. >>> a sarasota

tropical storm matthew is now hurricane matthew. it's the fifth hurricane of the 2016 atlantic hurricane season. the storm picked up strength about 190 miles away from the caribbean island country of curacao. swells generated by matthew are expected to affect portions of the coasts of puerto rico, aruba, venezuela, and colombia. maximum sustained winds have the bye week continues for the packers as they won't play until october 9th when the giants come to lambeau field. in the meantime, during the packers 34-27 win over the lions, a 66 yard pass interference call was made on detroit's nevin lawson. the play led to a packers touchdown. today, lawson said that the nfl said that the call was wrong and no flag should have been thrown. either way, the packers offense they started on sunday. tropical storm matthew, should strengthen to a category one hurricane. and by sunday morning, starts to make the hard turn to the north, heading into the eastern portion of cuba. and we did have the hurricane hunters flying through this at about 7:00, 8:00 last night. that went into the current forecast that we're seeing. and wind speeds they found the top speed at about 82 miles per hour. i think it's gaining some citrus county right now, this intense small area of thunderstorms. look at this, 141 lightning strikes. that's up almost double from what i showed you 10 minutes ago. please be careful. strong winds north and west of crystal river. and along 19a from clearwater to largo, seminole, pushing east, a batch of rain as well. all this has 20 do with the rain come -- has to do with the rain coming off the gulf of mexico. 77degrees at 8:00 a.m. 48 at noon, a few mo 87degrees at 4:00 p.m. and a good rain chance. look what happens through day, morning showers near the coast thanks to this west to east breeze. and then heat things up and start to see more

first, let's get the latest on hurricane matthew. within the last half hour, we learned it is now a category 4 hurricane. meteorologist ed bloodsworth joins us now with the latest track. ed, this thing is getting bigger and bigger. >> this is a rapidly intensified over the last 24 hours. going from a strong earlier today. satellite presentation, very really sort of a textbook hurricane here. winds are now at 140 miles an hour. the hurricane hunters have been flying in this thing all afternoon. making several passes through the storm. they are on their way back to home base. they had the winds right at 135 initially. seeing higher gusts. now sustained wind is set at 140 miles an hour. the latest forecast track from the hurricane center keeps us rolling rather slowly off to through saturday afternoon. being being picked up by an upper level trough. that results in a fairly hard right turn of the system. taking it as a major hurricane toward jamaica. the system is expected to remain as a category 2 hurricane over the bahamas. you see th
